Romans 3:9-20

Romans 3:9-20
ESV
No One Is Righteous
"What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, as it is written: 'None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.' 'Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.' 'The venom of asps is under their lips.' 'Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.' 'Their feet are swift to shed blood; in their paths are ruin and misery, and the way of peace they have not known.' 'There is no fear of God before their eyes.' Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin."

NASB
"What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin; as it is written, 'THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE; THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD; ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE.' 'THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE, WITH THEIR TONGUES THEY KEEP DECEIVING,' 'THE POISON OF ASPS IS UNDER THEIR LIPS'; 'WHOSE MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS'; 'THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD, DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS, AND THE PATH OF PEACE THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN.' 'THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES.' Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God; because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin."

Romans 3:1-8

Romans 3:1-8
ESV
God's Righteousness Upheld
"Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God. What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar, as it is written, 'That you may be justified in your words, and prevail when you are judged.' But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.) By no means! For then how could God judge the world? But if through my lie God's truth abounds to his glory, why am I still being condemned as a sinner? And why not do evil that good may come?--as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just."

NASB
All the World Guilty
"Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? Great in every respect. First of all, that they were entrusted with the oracles of God. What then? If some did not believe, their unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it? May it never be Rather, let God be found true, though every man be found a liar, as it is written, 'THAT YOU MAY BE JUSTIFIED IN YOUR WORDS, AND PREVAIL WHEN YOU ARE JUDGED.' But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? (I am speaking in human terms.) May it never be! For otherwise, how will God judge the world? But if through my lie the truth of God abounded to His glory, why am I also still being judged as a sinner? And why not say (as we are slanderously reported and as some claim that we say), 'Let us do evil that good may come'? Their condemnation is just."

Study of Romans: Welcome to Week 3 / Chapter 3

Incase you are just joinging us:

Ground Rules for this study:
1. Resources: A. The Holy Bible (The Word of God),
B. Concordance (Strongs)
C. Lexicon (Dictionary of Greek Words)
2. No Commentaries: However good they may be, this study is designed for God to teach us from His very own Word, not to study what others have learned.

Format for the Study:
1. Focus will be on 1 Chapter per week (Monday-Friday)
2. Each day will focus on a small portion of each chapter.

Post:
1. The posts will consist of 3 versions of the text:
A. ESV
B. NASB
C. Greek (1550 Stephanus New Testament)
2. Major words will be posted in English and Greek with their original Greek definition.

vs.

Comments:
3. Comments are welcome: Please no comments from commentaries...the point of this study is not to restate what other men have stated, but to let God speak to our hearts through the Book of Romans.

This is a very flexible study in terms of timing, if there are tough portions of Scripture that pose many thought provoking questions, we may take more time in those areas before moving on.

Thank you for participating!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

I hope that everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!!!!

Here is a great message for this time of year....Thanks Heath!

A little thanksgiving perspective....
A four-year-old boy said he was thankful for his glasses. "Why?
someone asked him. "Because it keeps the boys from hitting me - and the girls from kissing me."

TO BE "THINKFUL"
To be "Thinkful" is to be Thankful. If you think about things, you can thank God for them!

Luke 17:11-19
Jesus Cleanses Ten Lepers
"On the way to Jerusalem he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. And as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices, saying, 'Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.' When he saw them he said to them, 'Go and show yourselves to the priests.' And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus answered, 'Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?' And he said to him, 'Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.'"

Lepers: Basically lost their entire lives...to be a leper was to be unclean...was to be separated from your family and friends and loose all financial and social status...They lost everything!

Vs. 13 they cried out to Jesus, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us."
We all know that they wanted to be healed...and what does Jesus do?

Vs. 14 "Go and show yourselves to the priests."
Now why would they want to do that...the priests were the ones who pronounced them unclean, why would they want to go back just to be pronounced unclean!

But they went anyway...
And as they went....I can see this happening
"Hey George...Your face looks better, a lot better."
"Yeah!? So does yours!!!!" As everyones faces are starting to heal and their arms and legs and bodies!!
They all start to run to the Temple to show the priests...but George slows down, stops, turns around and runs back to Jesus.

Vs. 15 + 16 He through Himself at Jesus feet and with a loud voice praised Jesus and gave Him thanks!

Vs. 17-19 Jesus rightly asks why the other 9 have not returned to give Him thanks and Praise. Have you ever done anything for someone and not been thanked? It kind of hurts doesn't it? But God gave these men their lives back and only 1 came back to Thank Him!!!

What can we take out of this?

1. Do we take the TIME to be thankful?
The 9 didn't have time --- They needed to get to the priests to start their Ceremonial Cleansing!
They didn't make time for the ONE who had made it all possible!

***As soon as the 1 recognized God's hand, he gave thanks! We must learn to do this!***
Will you ask God to help you give thanks at all times, asking Him to show you His hand at work?

2. Do we allow CIRCUMSTANCES to determine/deter our thankfulness?
The 9 were to involved in the moment to give thanks!
Life is Good = To distracted to give thanks
Life is Bad = Not going to give thanks for this...are you kidding?

But we must give thanks in all things!!!
1 Thessalonians 5:18
"Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

***Offer up thanks in all circumstances! We must learn to do this!***
Will you ask God to help you give thanks in all circumstances?

3. Do we have a clear UNDERSTANDING of why to be thankful?
With a blessing there is Responsibility!!!
We say thanks for you benefit!!! Because in Thanking God we remember that He is the Creator and we are the created...That He is the Giver of all things and we only receive the gifts!

***Offering up thanks keeps us in the right perspective of Creator/Created, Giver/Receiver***
Will you ask God to help you keep this perspective throughout your daily life?

Thankfulness might be one of the Scarcest Virtues of all Humanity!

"If a person, at the same time that he receives remarkable kindness from God, has a sense of His infinite greatness, and that he is but nothing in comparison of Him, surely this will naturally raise his gratitude and praise the higher, for kindness to one so much inferior."
-Jonathan Edwards

BIG PICTURE
Do we live our lives as the 1? or the 9?

I must admit...most of the time....my life would look like the 9. And that needs to change.

Once again, Thank you Heath for this wonderful Message!

Lord Jesus, please help me to be more thankful. Help me to keep the correct perspective, that you are the Creator and I am the Created. Anything that you give me is a wonderful Gift and I do not deserve it at all! If I deserve anything it is death and separation from you. Thank you so much for the best gift of all...Salvation through your death on the cross and resurrection from the dead and that you have offered it freely to me! Lord, please change me. Make me more and more like yourself. In Jesus, Holy and Precious name, Amen.

In Christ,

David

Romans 2:25-29

Romans 2:25-29
ESV
"For circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision. So, if a man who is uncircumcised keeps the precepts of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? Then he who is physically uncircumcised but keeps the law will condemn you who have the written code and circumcision but break the law. For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God."

NASB
"For indeed circumcision is of value if you practice the Law; but if you are a transgressor of the Law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. So if the uncircumcised man keeps the requirements of the Law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? And he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the Law, will he not judge you who though having the letter of the Law and circumcision are a transgressor of the Law? For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God."

Romans 2:17-24
ESV
"But if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law and boast in God and know his will and approve what is excellent, because you are instructed from the law; and if you are sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth-- you then who teach others, do you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal? You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who boast in the law dishonor God by breaking the law. For, as it is written, 'The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.'"

NASB
The Jew Is Condemned by the Law
"But if you bear the name 'Jew' and rely upon the Law and boast in God, and know His will and approve the things that are essential, being instructed out of the Law, and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of the immature, having in the Law the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth, you, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that one shall not steal, do you steal? You who say that one should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who boast in the Law, through your breaking the Law, do you dishonor God? For 'THE NAME OF GOD IS BLASPHEMED AMONG THE GENTILES BECAUSE OF YOU,' just as it is written."

God's Judgment and the Law
"For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus."

NASB
"For all who have sinned without the Law will also perish without the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law; for it is not the hearers of the Law who are just before God, but the doers of the Law will be justified. For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves, in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus."

Romans 2:6-11

Romans 2:6-11
ESV
"He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. For God shows no partiality."

NASB
"who WILL RENDER TO EACH PERSON ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS: to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation. There will be tribulation and distress for every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek, but glory and honor and peace to everyone who does good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For there is no partiality with God."

Romans 2:1-5

Romans 2:1-5
ESV
God's Righteous Judgment
"Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who do such things. Do you suppose, O man--you who judge those who do such things and yet do them yourself--that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God's righteous judgment will be revealed."

NASB
The Impartiality of God
"Therefore you have no excuse, everyone of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. And we know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who practice such things. But do you suppose this, O man, when you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,"

Study of Romans: Welcome to week 2 / Chapter 2

In Christ,

David

Romans 1:28-32

Romans 1:28-32
ESV
"And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God's decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them."

NASB
"And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them."
