A Life Pleasing to God

1 Thessalonians 4:1-12
A Life Pleasing to God
Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to live and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you. Now concerning brotherly love you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another, for that indeed is what you are doing to all the brothers throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to do this more and more, and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, so that you may live properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one.

First in vs. 3-8 Paul tells us how not to live!
Gods will for our lives is Sanctification (to make holy, purify) and Paul tells us that we were not called for impurity, i.e. sexual immorality. Paul says that if we ignore this, we are not ignoring him, but God Himself! (More in this tomorrow! Ephesians 5)

So we are to live in self-control, but more than that Paul continues in vs. 9-12 that we are to have brotherly love.
Jesus said, "And he said to him, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. '" Matthew 22:37-39
Paul also says to live quietly and mind your own affairs as well as work with your own hands.

What need to we have to draw attention to our lives, or for that matter pry into our neighbors lives! Yes, we need to be our sharing the Love of Christ with them, but not spreading gossip around the neighborhood! And each person is to work with his own hands.
"Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need." Ephesians 4:28

Philippians 1:9-11
"And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God."

In Christ,

Dave
