1 More of the Be's for you!

Matthew 5:5
"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth."

What does meek mean?
Meek (according to dictionary.com) =
1. Showing patience and humility; gentle.
2. Easily imposed on; submissive.

Meek (as God sees it) = Strength Under Control!

Numbers 12:3
"Now the man Moses was very meek, more than all people who were on the face of the earth."

Do you see Moses as meek, if meekness is defined as above by dictionary.com?
The man who lead the Nation of Israel.
The man who stood before Pharaoh.
The man who killed an Egyptian with his bare hands.
The man who parted the Red Sea.
The man who smashed the 1st set of the 10 Commandments.
The man who met directly with God (face to face) on a regular basis.
Do these seem like the qualities of meekness as defined by the world?

I don't think so! But I think they fit in with God's definition.
Moses was a strong leader, but His strength came from and was under the control of God!

Moses lead a life that was yielded to God. We must strive to do the same! Keep our strength under God's control. Remembering that our strength only comes from Him!

Guys, this could come in very useful in your relationship with your wife/girlfriend!
Be a leader! But keep your strength under God's control!

In Christ,

David

Good stuff as always David! Though I might contest one thing, and forgive me if this is being too picky, but Moses never actually was "face to face" with God. Exodus 33:20-23 makes it pretty clear that us sinful people would die if we encountered God face to face. At least for now, before we are glorified at the resurresction. But the point you're making is no less valid. Keep it up!

You are 100% correct!
I was using the frase face to face as an illistration. Moses wasn't litterally face to face with God. It was more like Moses face was blocked by rocks and God's hand and then God's back passed before Moses. And when Moses came back to the people he was glowing so much that they couldn't even look at him. And Moses did meet with God many many times, and he always covered himself before he went before the people. God's Glory is His face and if we were to see His face we would die. But the point I was trying to make is that Moses met with God many times.

I hope this clarifies.

Thank you for being picky!!!

Maybe in the post I should change it from (face to face) to (face to back)?
But, it just doesn't sound right.

Great post. Where as "poor in spirit" is humility before god and recognizing your sinfulness, I view meekness and humility before man. It comes down to doing whatever God asks of you regardless of what other people think. It is complete submissiveness to God's will. A meek person is going about God's business, glorifying Him and not ourselves.

Jacob,

I found a verse for you. Going back to the whole face to face thing.

Exodus 33:11
"Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent."

What I don't understand is that LORD is used. That would be Yaweh wouldn't it? God the Father? If it was a Lord that could mean one of many things, Jesus being my first thought. But LORD is used!

This might be one of those questions that we just can't answer!

I think the LORD refers to the pre-incarnate Jesus Christ because he relfects the very nature of God.

John 10:30 "I and the Father are one."

John 10:38 "the Father is in Me, and I in the Father."

John 14:9 "He who has seen Me has seen the Father."

An alternate could be that "face to face" is a figure of speech meaning that he was in the presence of the Father, but not literally "face to face."

As I said I prefer the former interpretation that is was Jesus he was face to face with.

Kurt,
I completely understand what you are saying and I would like to agree that Moses was face to face with Christ...It becomes clear that Christ is the Glory or Face of God.

However, the all caps LORD is used in this passage (I think that is always used in reference to God the Father, Yahweh).
I know that if the phrase "Angel of the Lord" or even just the word Lord was used that it could mean the preincarnate Christ.

So, maybe the best way to look at this would be; Moses was in the presence of Almighty God and just that presence was enough to make Moses Shine so that the people couldn't look at him.

Whether Face to Face or simply just in the presence of God, it is still a very significant thing!

In Christ,

Dave

Here's a good question. Does God have a face in the same sense that we do? Or is this simply God using figurative language that our little brains can start to grasp at. I think David is right that it's the idea of the presence of God, but not in His fullness lest Moses would have died.

Interesting stuff.
