Holiness
What does this word mean?
According to Easton's Bible Dictionary @ Crosswalk.com
in the highest sense belongs to God (Isaiah 6:3; Revelation 15:4), and to Christians as consecrated to God's service, and in so far as they are conformed in all things to the will of God (Romans 6:19,22; Ephesians 1:4; Titus 1:8; 1 Peter 1:15). Personal holiness is a work of gradual development. It is carried on under many hindrances, hence the frequent admonitions to watchfulness, prayer, and perseverance (1 Corinthians 1:30; 2co 7:1; Ephesians 4:23,24).
According to Dictionary.com The word Holy means:
1. Belonging to, derived from, or associated with a divine power; sacred.
2. Regarded with or worthy of worship or veneration; revered: a holy book.
3. Living according to a strict or highly moral religious or spiritual system; saintly: a holy person.
4. Specified or set apart for a religious purpose: a holy place.
5. Solemnly undertaken; sacrosanct: a holy pledge.
6. Regarded as deserving special respect or reverence: The pursuit of peace is our holiest quest.
My own definition:
Perfection
In 1 Peter 1:15, Peter states: "but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, 'You shall be holy, for I am holy."
God sets the bar! He is Holy there for we as His people are called to be Holy!
But how can any of us be perfect?
The simple answer....We can't! Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God"
The Long answer....Through Jesus Christ! Romans 3:24-25a "and we are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.
It is the process of Sanctification that God is working in us. He changes us and molds us into His own Righteousness or Holiness (if you will)!
Last night my buddy Dan made a good point. God sees us as either Unrighteous (which we are in and of ourselves because of sin) or Righteous (which is not from ourselves but from Christ). Ephesians 2:8-10 For by grace you have been save through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before hand, that we should walk in them."
God did something for Isaiah in the 6th Chapter of Isaiah, but put yourself in his shoes, God does the very same thing for us through Jesus Christ.
Isaiah 6:1-8
"In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said; 'Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!' And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said: 'Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!' Then one of the srephim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the alter. And he touched my mouth and said: 'Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for." And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?' Then I said, 'Here am I! Send me.'
Just as Isaiah had his sin atoned for (the price of sin had been paid for Isaiah), Christ has paid the price for us. If you believe in Christ Jesus, He is working in you and sanctifying you, making you into the likeness of His Holiness. We are called out to live Holy lives, to live as Saints of the Living God. And only through the Grace of Jesus Christ is this possible for us!
1 Thessalonians 5:23-24
"Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it."
In Christ
