Update

Hello All:

Yes I am still Alive!

I have been extreemly busy here in Chicago at Moody Bible Institute...I have 3 classes (a ton of Homework), a fulltime job (SprintNextel Repairs), and Ministry in the City!

Here is the Update:
I still plan on finishing the series that I started way back when on Humility.
The next part will be the Doctrine of Sin, followed by the doctrines of Grace.
I have also been asked to write out a Biblical support for the 5 points of Calvinism. Which I will try to do my best with.

The timeline for this is very fluid right now...I am hoping that in December I will be able to post quite regularly and get most of this done...however during the semester I am not sure how much I will be able to post. After I finish these topics I will try to post more frequently, but the topics will be based on the millions of things that I am learning in School. I am going to try to use this site as a place where I can bring all my thoughts and the teachings of those classes together. Hopefully it will all come together and be mutually edifying!

I do however have a MAJOR prayer request...without going into to much detail...please pray that God would be gracious and provide financially that I would be able to stay at Moody without going into any type of debt.

Thanks,

In Christ,

David

The 5 points of Calvinism. Is that TULIP or the 5 Solas?

Gregory,

TULIP would be the 5 points of Calvin.

The 5 Solas would be the main points of the Reformation as a whole.

If I have time I might just go ahead and do a post on the 5 solas as well.

I just want you to know that these are not going to be debate posts...however you may respond to them...and you may also want to copy them to one of your sites and comment that way if you would like. If you have any questions about what I post, feel free to ask, but I will be up front with in and say that I am not going to debate -- we know from the past that neither of us will be swayed and we will only strengthen our respective beliefs through our own study and another possibility is that some may read the debate and get turned off (thinking -- aren't these two guys Christians? And they are fighting like this?). And we don't want that to happen.

Anywho, these posts will come in December sometime.

In Christ,

David

Dave, I get that. I respect the no debate policy of your blog. I probably will reply to your defence of Tulip at The Barque of Peter, when you've finished, and in the meantime I will ask plenty of questions, I'm sure.

As to the five solas being the "pillars of the Reformation," since Catholics agree with three of the five, are they then rightly called "pillars" of the Reformation? Wouldn't Sola Fide and Sola Scriptura be the only actual pillars distinct to the Reformation, and the other three be "pillars of Christianity" as a whole?

Just a thought.

Well Gregory I think the other three are a perspective issue. In the protestant perspective for instance "To the glory of God alone" is not something upheld by Roman Catholics. From our perspective saying that works are necessary takes away from the Glory of God because it is completely His merit and not ours that saves us. So from a protestant perspective, the RC church doesn't uphold Sola Deo Gloria nor Sola Gratia nor Solus Christus nor Sola Fide nor Sola Scriptura.

I'm not trying to start a new battle with you, nor do I wish to argue about it. Simply it is a perspective issue. From a RC perspective you would say that three of the five are upheld, from a protestant perspective we would say that the RC church doesn't truly uphold any of those five doctrines. Know what I mean?

David, I would say your "perspective" issue is one more of misunderstanding Catholic teaching, rather than any actual difference with the first three Solas.

Since we want all glory to go to God, and God gets all the glory, because it is only through His grace, only through Christ, that we can have faith or do works, it is incorrect to say that in Catholicism, us meriting our own salvation takes away from God's grace--since, in Catholicism, we can't merit God's grace of Salvation, through our works. Indeed, if your description of what we believe was accurate, then so would be your conclusions. But since the premise is flawed, so is the outcome.

Hey Dave,
I just wanted to mention that I replied to your comments at Jacob's blog, but I couldn't publish them there for some reason. :( Blogger wouldn't let me sign in in his message box, even though I was signed in at my blog.

Anyway, so that I wouldn't lose my reply, I put my comments into the comments section of my reply to his article, so if you want, you can read them there.

God bless
Gregory

(Sproul has a lot of good stuff to say.)

Hey David.
Just to make you aware, in case you weren't still reading, some further replies have been made to you at my blog (including a reply from myself personally). I'm not expecting you to respond, but I would encourage you to read.

Jacob,
for some inexplicable reason, I've been unable to leave a comment on your blog. I'm not sure what's going on, but it won't accept my password when I enter it in commenting. Some other people have expressed similar concerns.

God bless
Gregory

That's odd, I haven't done anything different. I switched over to the updated blogger, but otherwise nothing has changed.
