Happy Mother's Day -- A little late
Happy Mother's Day
I would like to focus on a Mother today...one whom many of us know of, but most do not know her name! Without her we might not be where we are today. She was a wonderful woman of Faith (mentioned only twice in the Bible) who raised her three children with the knowledge of the One True and Living God!
What she did, is something that we all can learn from and put into practice in our lives.
BASKET CASE:
Numbers 26:59
"The name of Amram's wife was Jochebed the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt. And she bore to Amram Aaron and Moses and Miriam their sister."
Exodus 6:20
"Amram took as his wife Jochebed his father's sister, and she bore him Aaron and Moses, the years of the life of Amram being 137 years."
If you didn't catch it, her name is Jochebed...she was the mother of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.
The story is found in Exodus 1-2:10
Israel Increases Greatly in Egypt
"These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each with his household: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. All the descendants of Jacob were seventy persons; Joseph was already in Egypt. Then Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation. But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them.
Pharaoh Oppresses Israel
"Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. And he said to his people, 'Behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us. Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and, if war breaks out, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.' Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with heavy burdens. They built for Pharaoh store cities, Pithom and Raamses. But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel. So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves and made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field. In all their work they ruthlessly made them work as slaves. Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, 'When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live.' But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live. So the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, 'Why have you done this, and let the male children live?' The midwives said to Pharaoh, 'Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.' So God dealt well with the midwives. And the people multiplied and grew very strong. And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families. Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, 'Every son that is born to the Hebrews you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live.'"
Exodus 2
The Birth of Moses
"Now a man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman. The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months. When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank. And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him. Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her young women walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it. When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She took pity on him and said, 'This is one of the Hebrews' children.' Then his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, 'Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?' And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, 'Go.' So the girl went and called the child's mother. And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, 'Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.' So the woman took the child and nursed him. When the child grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, 'Because,' she said, 'I drew him out of the water.'"
Interesting tidbits: Word Meanings:
Moses = to Birth, to draw out
Basket = Arc
Hebrews 11:23
"By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king's edict."
We see that this whole story about Moses' birth and how he was raised was a result of the Faith of Jochebed! She trusted God and that He had a plan. So she put her child in a basket.
Moses was a BASKET CASE! He was given to God and place in His care!
GOD is ODD: The Pharaoh was a dictator. What is our reaction today if someone would tell us that we had to through our child into a river? Some of us would want to Nuke the guy, others would be extremely upset and protest, and some might do what the Midwives did and what Jochebed did!
There are 5 women in this story and 3 go unnamed! Yet without them, without their faith, we might not be here today!
We must learn to let go of the things that don't go our way! God is in control. Let God be God!
This is NOT let go and let God!!!
Jochebed didn't quite let go...
She used her head! She trained her kids! Aaron did even speak of his brother...not even to his friends? What young child would not let that slip even once? Hey, guess what? I have a brother!!!
She also trained Miriam to watch after Moses! Miriam was the one who asked the Daughter of Pharaoh "shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?" Umm...I wonder who she is going to go and get?
Jochebed also did some amazing planning! She must have known that the Daughter of Pharaoh frequented a certain area along the banks of the Nile, so she place the basket in that area and in reeds so that it wouldn't float away to fast.
But when things didn't go as she had planned...she let go of her plans and let God be God.
You see Moses was most-likely taken to the palace around age 4. What mother could let her child go? One that trusted in God, that He had a much bigger plan in mind!
Exodus 2:11-15
Moses Flees to Midian
"One day, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and looked on their burdens, and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people. He looked this way and that, and seeing no one, he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. When he went out the next day, behold, two Hebrews were struggling together. And he said to the man in the wrong, 'Why do you strike your companion?' He answered, 'Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?' Then Moses was afraid, and thought, 'Surely the thing is known.' When Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and stayed in the land of Midian. And he sat down by a well."
Acts 7:23-25
"When he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel. And seeing one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian. He supposed that his brothers would understand that God was giving them salvation by his hand, but they did not understand."
Hebrews 11:24-27
"By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible."
So why didn't Moses being taken from His mother at the age of 4 and being brought up in the Palace for 36 years believe in the god's of Pharaoh and "refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter"?
Because Jochebed taught Moses who was God!
How? Good question!
Moses wrote the first 5 books of the Bible so how could Jochebed teach him what was in them?
Well, that comes from Genesis 15, where God promised Abraham that many nations would come from him. This promise was passed to Isaac and down to Jacob. Jacob also passed it down to his 12 sons...who we heard about at the very beginning of this post! Jochebed knew of this promise and she knew the God who made the promise!
She prepared the Person for the Path, not the Path for the Person!
She brought Moses up in the knowledge of God. She trained him up as a man who had a special calling on his life. She didn't know what that calling was but she prepared him the best way she could...knowing who God is!
Prepare the Person for the Path, not the Path for the Person!
