Back to that Malchizedek guy from Hebrews

Hebrews 5-7

Check out the other posts....Who is Malchizedek and Jesus, The best High Priest.

After reading this over and over and researching it a bit more I have had a few more insights that could be helpful.

1. Malchizedek was a real human...Hebrews says that he has no father or mother and no genealogy, how can he be human? When he appears in Genesis, he comes out of no where! He just seems to appear. This is what the writer of Hebrews is referring to.

2. He is the King of Salem, Priest of the Most High. Salem, also another name for Jerusalem! Salem, also means Peace. So, he is the King of Jerusalem and of Peace and his name also means Righteousness. He is also the Priest of the Most High!
This would be like having President Bush also be the Spiritual Leader of America. Or say, your favorite preacher/pastor and your political leader as the same person! It is unheard of today and it was also unheard of in the time of Israel when the letter of Hebrews was written!

3. Malchizedek was a Priest of the Most High God, and didn't have the law. He was not of the Nation of Israel. And he blessed Abram...which Hebrews states is a sign that he was better than Abram. Put yourself in the shoes of the Pharisee's, this was an absolute insult! Abraham and Moses were held in the highest regard and saying that someone who was not apart of Israel was better than the founders was unheard of!

4. Malchizedek is a type and Jesus is the Anti-type. For all you literary people out there!
A type is kind of like a prototype. And the Anti-type would be the refinement/perfection of the prototype/type. Malchizedek was a priest of the Most High God for all people. Not just the Nation of Israel....there was no Israel in his day! Jesus is also a priest of the Most High God for all people, but he is a Priest Forever (Hebrews 7:21)! Jesus is better than Malchizedek and Malchizedek was better than all the Priests of the Nation of Israel.

Jesus is the Great High Priest of the Most High God for all people!

In Christ,

David

Another cool Melchizedek/Jesus connection is Mel's offering. He offered bread and wine when he met Abraham. It's the only time bread and wine are offered by themselves until Jesus institutes the Eucharist at the Last Supper!

The connection is stronger when we realise that being the King of Salem probably meant Jerusalem, and that is where Jesus offered His ultimate sacrifice, as well as instituting the Eucharist.

Something I discovered about Melchizedek is that a lot of scholars theorise that he might have in fact been Shem, the son of Noah. If you read the geneological accounts and do the math, he would have still been alive in Abraham's day! Thus, in a sense, Abraham and the entire Israelite nation came out of Shem (ie, "Semitic") and without Melchizedek/Shem there would never have been an Israel--similar to how apart from Jesus, we are and can do nothing (John 15:4).

I love how God writes history like we write novels!

God bless!
