Romans Chapter 1:1-7

Romans 1:1-7
ESV
Greeting
"Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ."

NASB
The Gospel Exalted
"Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name's sake, among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ; to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ."

Things going good?

Hopefully on Monday!!!
I have been working on a question that Jon had for me about Assurance of Salvation.

Does you ESV Concordance have lexicon #'s and a Hebrew/Greek dictionary? The one that I just got doesn't. :(

So, the study will primarily be from the NASB. But it will still compare and contrast the ESV with the NASB.

God Bless,

Dave

Alright,
Let the study begin!!!
From studying these words, here is a translation that I have come up with. It will be a little drawn out!!
Romans 1:1-7
1. I Paul, a slave of the Messiah, Jesus; called to be a messenger of the Messiah, set apart to announce the good news of God,
2. that God announced before through His interpreters of His divine will in the Sacred writings,
3. about His Son, who was sown from King David down from the flesh,
4. and was marked off to be the Son of God with power, might, and strength according to the Wind of Gods Holiness by His standing up from being dead, Jesus who is the Anointed One our Master,
5. on account of Jesus we have received kindness and a sending away to hear and attend to faithfulness for the sake of Jesus name throughout all races,
6. this includes you, who are called a part of Jesus the Messiah.
7. To you in Rome who are loved by God and called to be Holy: Kindness and peace from God our Father and the Master Jesus the Messiah.

My oppinion is that Both the NASB and the ESV have the translation down! They are very accurate! The only reason I like this flushed out version (even though it is a lot longer) is that it brings out the meanings of some words that over time have lost some meaning in our culture.

Verse 1: Paul is describing who he is and what has happened to him. He was called/set apart by Jesus to be a messenger of the Gospel of Christ.

Verse 2: This is the Gospel that God told us about before through the Prophets and Scripture

Verse 3: Jesus was a decendant of King David just as the Scripture foretold

Verse 4: Jesus was set apart as God's Son by God Himself

Verse 5: Because of Jesus we have received grace and a calling to obedience of faith to be shared with every man for the name sake of Jesus

Verse 6: This is for everyone who has been called to be a follower of Jesus

Verse 7: To those who are in Rome and are loved by God and called to be Holy: Grace and peace extended from God our Father and our Lord/Master Jesus Christ/Messiah.

Paul was called to preach the Good News that Jesus died for us (as he will get into later) and he also extends that call to us (vs.6).
This is pretty much Paul telling us how he was changed from a pursecutor of the Christians into a Christian Himself...and it sets up the rest of the Letter to the Romans.

Romans 1:1-17

The Glorious Gospel

What is the Gospel?
Literaly it means Good News!

1. Good News about Jesus Christ (vs 3 & 4), Who He was and What He did, in the Gospel, Christ is the focus, not His Teachings. (but His teachings are very closely related to who He is!!!)

2. It is also Bad news about us!
1. We live in rooms without windows and we can't see the storm that is coming...we are not prepared for the Wrath of God!
Romans is the Window! Through Romans we can see God's Wrath building and we can prepare for it!

The way to prepare comes in Romans 13 -- Have Nothing to do with Immorality but cloth yourselfs with Christ.

In Christ,

David

Why is the Gospel so important?

Vs. 1 & 16
1. Because is Saves us From Sin
It's about what Christ has done -- Not what we can do!!!

We will see that Sin is punishment of Sin, God hands us over to sin, and His Daily Wrath, and His Coming Wrath!

2. It saves us for God!
Vs. 7 We are called to be Saints...set apart for God!

In the Greek the word for Called is the root for the word Pharisee!
Meaning Zeal for God!

In Christ,

David
