Confidence and Hope in Jesus
Hebrews 3:1-6
Jesus Greater Than Moses
"Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God's house. For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses -- as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God's house as a son. And we are his house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope."
Vs. 1-2
The Author is addressing Christians, "you who share in a heavenly calling,"! But next, "Consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession,"! Wouldn't you think that if they were Christians that they would have already considered Jesus?
I think what the Author is really trying to do is make the biggest distinction of just who Jesus is. Who better to compare Jesus to (for the Hebrews/Nation of Israel/Jews) than Moses? He is right up there with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Isaiah! The Author is saying that just as Moses was faithful to God, so was Jesus!
Vs. 3-6
Here is where the Author really digs in! This is the main point, Jesus is worthy of so much more honor than Moses! In vs. 5, the Author says, "Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant,"! Moses was only considered to be a servant in God's house!! Vs. 6 "but Christ is faithful over God's house as a son. And we are his house". We -- as in "you who share in a heavenly calling" and "holy brothers", we are the house! Would not Moses, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Isaiah all be a part of this house? But there is a distinction between them and Jesus! Jesus was faithful OVER God's house, OVER us!
Jesus is completely set apart from us and for that matter any created being! John 1:1-5 says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."
Jesus says,
"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.'" John 14:6-7
"Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.' John 8:12
Our Confidence and Hope rest in Jesus Christ! Confidence in all of the promises that God has given to use!
In Christ,
David
