3 Comments:
Once again a much longer translation:
Romans 1:16-17
16. For I am not ashamed of/disgraced by the Good News, for the Good News is the Power/Might/Strength of God for the deliverance/Salvation to all who have confidence (in Christ Jesus), to the Jewish people first and also to the Gentile.
17. For in the Good News the righteousness/justice/correctness/rightness of God is uncovered from confidence to confidence, as it is written, those who are right (with God) shall live by Confidence (in Christ Jesus).
And now for my comments:
16. Here Paul makes a statement, that He is not ashamed and from the Greek deducted also that he is not disgraced by the Gospel of Jesus Christ (something that He used to pursecute!) Why? Because in this Gospel is the Power of God for the Salvation of all those who put their faith / have confidence in the fact that Jesus was the Messiah. And this was offered first to the Jewish people through the Disciples and then to the Gentiles / everyone else, by Paul and others.
17. Paul continues explaining what the Gospel does...in the Gospel God's righteousness / His rightness / His Justice and correctness or revealed from the faith or confidence of one person to the next. And he quotes the OT saying that those who are in a right relationship with God will have confidence in His promise of the Messiah, who Jesus proved himself to be (and God also said He was!)
In Christ,
David
I like using the word confidence there. Because really the biblical understanding of faith is "trust". I think confidence is a good use as well.
Why is Paul not ashamed or disgraced by the gospel of Jesus Christ? Because of what he says in Romans 8:18. "For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us." Paul clearly understands how short our time on earth is and what the power of Christ has done in him through confidence/trus in the gospel.
