Romans 11:11-16

Romans 11:11-16
ESV
Gentiles Grafted In
"So I ask, did they stumble in order that they might fall? By no means! Rather through their trespass salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make Israel jealous. Now if their trespass means riches for the world, and if their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion mean! Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry in order somehow to make my fellow Jews jealous, and thus save some of them. For if their rejection means the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead? If the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, so is the whole lump, and if the root is holy, so are the branches."

NASB
"I say then, they did not stumble so as to fall, did they? May it never be! But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make them jealous. Now if their transgression is riches for the world and their failure is riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their fulfillment be! But I am speaking to you who are Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle of Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, if somehow I might move to jealousy my fellow countrymen and save some of them. For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? If the first piece of dough is holy, the lump is also; and if the root is holy, the branches are too."

Stephanus 1550 New Testament

The Long Version:
Romans 11:11-16
Gentiles Grafted in

11. So I ask, did they (Jews) stumble in order that they might fall? By no means! May it never be! Rather through their trespass/false step/falling away salvation/deliverance has come to the Gentiles (races/nations not of Israel), so as to make Israel jealous/zealous.

12. Now if their trespass/false step/falling away means riches/abundance for the world, and if their failure/loss means riches/abundance for the Gentiles, how much more will their full/complete inclusion mean!

13. Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle/messenger to the Gentiles (races/nations not of Israel), I magnify/esteem glorious my ministry/service

14. in order somehow to make my fellow Jews/flesh jealous/zealous, and thus save some of them.

15. For if their rejection/throwing away is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance/receiving mean but life from the dead?

16. If the dough offered as firstfruits is holy/sacred, so is the whole lump; and if the root is holy/sacred, so are the branches.

My Comments:

This is a hard passage of Scripture to comment on. But it is even more difficult to comment on this section and wait until tomorrow for the following section. They go together and both need to be kept in mind at the same time.

So...

11. Did God have the Jews stumble over Jesus Christ...just so that they would fall?
No, this was so that He could extend His love to the entire world and not just Israel. By the stumbling of the Jews, salvation was extended to the world.

12. This is a toughy!!! It sounds like Paul is saying that because they fell away so that the world could be included, now that that has happened, how much more will they all be saved.
Well, in a sense this is what Paul is saying, BUT, we must remember what we have previously read from Paul.
The plan of Salvation is through Jesus Christ.
What Paul is saying here is that once they realize the truth and accept Christ as the Messiah/Savior, how much more will their full inclusion mean!!!

13. Now he changes to speak only to the Gentiles. He is a messanger sent to them, and sees his assignement and service to God as glorious work for the Lord.

14. Because through his work, he can provoke his fellow Jews to jealousy (a jealousy that they are no longer the only ones who God has chosen), and through this save some.
This also points back to vs. 12 and the full inclusion statement. Save some! Not all.

15. This is kind of a recap. Because they rejected Christ, reconciliation was opened to the rest of the wolrd, and now if they accept Christ, they also will have life from the dead.

16. The firstfruit of the offering, if it is holy, so then the rest of the offering is holy. Same with a tree, if the root is holy, the whole tree is holy.
This is why some were cut off, so that the whole could be holy!
And in their place, Gentiles were grafted in....
But we will get to that tomorrow.

In Christ,

David
