The Remnant of Israel
"I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel? 'Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.' But what is God's reply to him? 'I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.' So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace. What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened, as it is written, 'God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear, down to this very day.' And David says, 'Let their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them; let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, and bend their backs forever.'"

Israel Is Not Cast Away
"I say then, God has not rejected His people, has He? May it never be! For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected His people whom He foreknew Or do you not know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel? 'Lord, THEY HAVE KILLED YOUR PROPHETS, THEY HAVE TORN DOWN YOUR ALTARS, AND I ALONE AM LEFT, AND THEY ARE SEEKING MY LIFE.' But what is the divine response to him? 'I HAVE KEPT for Myself SEVEN THOUSAND MEN WHO HAVE NOT BOWED THE KNEE TO BAAL.' In the same way then, there has also come to be at the present time a remnant according to God's gracious choice. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace. What then? What Israel is seeking, it has not obtained, but those who were chosen obtained it, and the rest were hardened; just as it is written, 'GOD GAVE THEM A SPIRIT OF STUPOR, EYES TO SEE NOT AND EARS TO HEAR NOT, DOWN TO THIS VERY DAY.' And David says, 'LET THEIR TABLE BECOME A SNARE AND A TRAP, AND A STUMBLING BLOCK AND A RETRIBUTION TO THEM. LET THEIR EYES BE DARKENED TO SEE NOT, AND BEND THEIR BACKS FOREVER.'"

The Long Version:
Romans 11:1-10
The Remnant of Israel/Israel is not Cast Away
1. I ask, then, has God rejected/thrust away his people? By no means! May it never be! For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin.
2. God has not rejected/thrust away his people whom He foreknew. Do you not know/perceive what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he appeals/entreats/confers/pleads with God against Israel?
3. 'Lord/Master/Owner they have killed your prophets, they have demolished/torn down your altars/place to offer sacrifices, and I alone am left, and they seek my life/breath/soul.'
4. But what is God's reply to him? 'I have kept/left behind for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.'
5. So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen/divine selection by grace/unmerritted favor/unearned kindness.
6. But if it is by grace/unmerritted favor/unearned kindness, it is no longer/more on the basis of works; otherwise grace/unmerritted favor/unearned kindness would no longer be grace/unmerritted favor/unearned kindness.
7. What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect/chosen/divine selection obtained it, but the rest/remaining were hardened/petrified/callous,
8. as it is written, 'God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that would not see and ears that would not hear/listen, down to this very day.'
9. And David says, 'Let their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution/requital/recompense/pay back for them;
10. let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, and bend their backs forever.'
My Comments:
1. Did God reject the people on whom He set His love?
Paul is evidence that God has not fully and finally removed His love. He is an Israelite!
2. Paul gave evidence that God hasn't in his day, and here gives evidence that back in the days of the Prophets God hadn't removed His love from His chosen people.
3.-4. 1 Kings 19:10-18
"He said, 'I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.' And he said, 'Go out and stand on the mount before the LORD.' And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, 'What are you doing here, Elijah?' He said, 'I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.' And the LORD said to him, 'Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel, and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place. And the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha put to death. Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.'"
Paul is emphazizing that fact that God has chosen a few for Himself.
5. Here Paul brings it back and reafirms that God has done the same in His time. That even though the Israelites have rejected Christ as a nation, there are still those whom God has chosen to believe in Christ, Paul being the example here.
(This goes as well for our time!)
As a world, we have rejected Christ as God, but God has chosen a remnant to believe in His Son!
6. Here Paul very clearly contrasts a Grace based Faith with a Works based Faith. Faith has nothing to do with works of the law, there is nothing that we can do to earn the right to be called the Children of God!
7. Pauls conclusion: The nation of Israel failed to receive salvation by upholding the law. The elect of Israel (and now those that are outside of Israel, the rest of the World) has obtained salvation through Grace. And the rest of the Nation of Israel has been hardened against Christ.
8. Isaiah 29:10
"For the LORD has poured out upon you a spirit of deep sleep,
and has closed your eyes (the prophets), and covered your heads (the seers)."
Deutonomy 29:4
"But to this day the LORD has not given you a heart to understand or eyes to see or ears to hear."
Isaiah 43:8
"Bring out the people who are blind, yet have eyes, who are deaf, yet have ears!"
Jeremiah 5:21
"Hear this, O foolish and senseless people, who have eyes, but see not, who have ears, but hear not."
Ezekiel 12:2
"Son of man, you dwell in the midst of a rebellious house, who have eyes to see, but see not, who have ears to hear, but hear not, for they are a rebellious house."
9.-10. Psalm 69:22-23
"Let their own table before them become a snare; and when they are at peace, let it become a trap. Let their eyes be darkened, so that they cannot see, and make their loins tremble continually."
This is Total Depravity of the Human race.
They have eyes to see God, yet they do not see Him.
They also have ears to hear and obey, but they do not hear or obey God.
This is the process by which a nations heart is hardened. More and more people turn from God to serve themselves.
In Christ,
David
God Revealed
3 Anchoring Truths that we can hold onto when confusion comes!
Chapter 9 = Salvation is for all who call!
Chapter 10 = We have and must make a choice!
Chapter 11 = What about Israel?
Has God rejected Israel forever?
NO! He is calling out a believing Remnant. If people say, "I don't need you." God says, "Then Go." God hardens them in their choice!
Is God done with Israel?
NO! He will come to them again!!
1. The Faithful Love of God (1-16)
Faithful Covenent keeping! God always keeps His promises!
He will not abandon Israel.
God displays this to Israel as well as us! He doesn't change.
At times it may be less visible in your life, but His love does not diminish for you, ever!
2. The Sovergein Power of God (17-24)
God never surrenders His Sovergeinty to our choices!!!
He has the right to step in and move people and nations any way He wants! (Check out Daniel 4)
No matter what you face, there is nothing greater than God!!!
David and Goliath -- Who won? It was not David, it was God!!! This is not a story about "The little guy can win." The BIG GUY WON!!!!
Don't be Arrogent toward Israel! You also at one time rejected Christ! (Vs. 21-24) God is dealing Sovergienly with groups of people.
3. The Perfect Wisdom of God (24-36)
God has turned to the Gentiles for now, then He will (at Christ's return) redeem Israel. (Zach 12)
A great turning of Israel!
In Christ,
David
