Romans 9:30-33

Romans 9:30-33
ESV
Israel's Unbelief
"What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, a righteousness that is by faith; but that Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness did not succeed in reaching that law. Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, as it is written, 'Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.'"

NASB
"What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, attained righteousness, even the righteousness which is by faith; but Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, did not arrive at that law. Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as though it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone, just as it is written, 'BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.'"

The Long Version:
Romans 9:30-33
Israel's Unbelief

30. What shall we say, then? That Gentiles (those not of the Jewish Nation of Israel) who did not pursue righteousness have attained/seized it, that is a righteousness that is by faith/confidence in Christ;

31. but that Israel (God's chosen people) who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness did not succeed in reaching/arriving at that law.

32. Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith/confidence in Christ, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone,

33. as it is written, 'Behold I am laying in Zion (the Holy City) a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense; and whoever believes/trusts/has confidence in Him will not be put to shame/disgrace/dishonor.

My Comments:

30. Paul makes a clear distinction hear, that the Gentiles did not have the law nor obey the law, but have attained righteousness...a right relationship with God, through faith.

31. And that Israel who pursued righteousness through the law and obeying the law, did not attain righteousness.

32. Why is this???
Because Israel didn't have faith, they thought it was enough to work their way to God by obeying the law.
Bit o' History -- Paul used to be Saul...one of the most devoute Pharisee's, but Christ changed his life one day. So Paul knows very well, both sides of the coin so to say...He used to live by works and now lives by faith in Christ Jesus!

33. The stumbling stone is Jesus Christ.
Psalm 2
The Reign of the LORD's Anointed
"Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his anointed, saying,
3'Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.'
4He who sits in the heavens laughs;
the Lord holds them in derision.
5Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying,
6'As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.'
7I will tell of the decree: The LORD said to me, 'You are my Son; today I have begotten you.
(Hebrews 5:5 "So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, 'You are my Son,today I have begotten you' and Luke 9:28-36 The Transfiguration
"Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray. And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, 'Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah'--not knowing what he said. As he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, 'This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him!' And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.)
8Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.
9You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.'
10Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth.
11Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
12Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him."

Psalm 118:21-23
"I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation.
22The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
23This is the LORD's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes."

Isaiah 9:11-18
Fear God, Wait for the LORD
"For the LORD spoke thus to me with his strong hand upon me, and warned me not to walk in the way of this people, saying: 'Do not call conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy, and do not fear what they fear, nor be in dread. But the LORD of hosts, him you shall regard as holy. Let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. And he will become a sanctuary and a stone of offense and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And many shall stumble on it. They shall fall and be broken; they shall be snared and taken.' Bind up the testimony; seal the teaching among my disciples. I will wait for the LORD, who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in him. Behold, I and the children whom the LORD has given me are signs and portents in Israel from the LORD of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion."

1 Peter 2:4-8 Says this:
"As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture:
'Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.'
So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe,
'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,'
and
'A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.'
They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do."

We see that Jesus is the Chosen one, the Christ, the Messiah!
He is the Corner Stone that holds everything up as well as the Stumbling Stone, the reason why people will not be saved. Because they reject Him as the Messiah, as Very God Himself!

This is the Message of Romans!
Jesus is the Christ, He is the only way that we can return to a right relationship with God, the kind of relationship that humans once had with God in the Garden of Eden, but was broken because Adam and Eve chose to disobey God. Through Christ, because He fulfilled the law completely, we can return to that right relationship!

Now in Chapter 10, we move into application!
No that I know this what do I do?

The answer coming next week!
But if you can't wait here is the short version:
Romans 10:8-17
"But what does it say? 'The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart' (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim);"

(HERE IS THE FIRST PART)
"because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him (Jesus) from the dead, you will be saved.
For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved."

"For the Scripture says, 'Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.' For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For 'everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'

(HERE IS THE SECOND PART)
But how are they to call on him (Jesus) in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him (Jesus) of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, 'How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!' But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, 'Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?' So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ (Jesus)."

In Christ,

David

Finding Peace with God

If you were to die tonight, are you sure that you would go to heaven? How do you know?
Don't just gloss over this question!! Many will miscalculate wrong or chose wrong, and not end up in heaven.

How difficult is finding Peace with God?

1. The Difficulty of peace with God.
This is something that we attain:
Vs. 30-33

2. The Difficulty of peace with God.
Don't fall into the thinking that it doesn't matter what you believe as long as you are sincere...the Jewish people in Vs. 30-33 are sincere and Zealous...but they are wrong.
Vs. 10:1-5

We can't mix effort/works with trust/faith!
Galations 5:2-4

3. The Simplicity of peace with God.
You don't have to do anything but believe. Vs. 10:5-13
The word is near -- the table is set, Christ has come and done the work! Vs. 6-7
Who was this done for? Vs. 11-13 "Everyone"!
How does it work???
Vs. 9-10
Confess = repent, to say the same, say what God says
Believe in your heart = trust

If you had cancer and it was terminal and the doctor gave you 5 options for possible cures, you would do your homework! Find the solution that has the best possibility for sucess and take that route...but you would still have to get the treatment or surgery done.
Christ is the only cure for the cancer of Sin...there are many things that pose as cures but the cure of Christ is 100% effective...you still need to make the choice to go in and get the surgery done!

Let's get it done: Believe in your heart that Jesus Christ is the only hope of Salvation and confess it with your mouth!

4. The Beauty of peace with God.
It is freely give. Vs. 14-15

Not all believe, but Salvation is available to all! Vs. 16-21

God doesn't take it away, He offers it!
Vs. 21 He offers it "All day long"!

In Christ,

David
