"I am speaking the truth in Christ--I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit-- that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen."

The Long Version:
Romans 9:1-5
God's Sovereign Choice/Solicitude for Israel
1. I am speaking the truth in Christ--I am not lying;my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit--
2. that I have great sorrow/pain of body or mind/grief and unceasing/incessant anguish/pain/distress in my heart.
3. For I could wish/pray that I myself were accursed/an offering for (votive offering) and cut off/separated from Christ for the sake/on behalf of my brothers, my kinsmen/relatives according to the flesh.
4. They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory/praise/honor, the covenants, the giving of the law/legislation, the worship, and the promises.
5. To them belong the patriarchs/fathers, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ who is God over all, blesses/praised/well spoken of forever. Amen/verily/truly.
My Comments:
1. This is very similar to an oath. Paul is calling on a Higher power (Christ's and the Holy Spirit's power) to verify that He is telling the truth.
2. Paul is extreemly heart broken...
3. Over His peoples unbelief in Christ. He is willing to (like Christ) take on their punishment for sin for their salvation.
4. Paul explains why He is so greeved over them, for they were given multiple blessings from God...
5. But the most precious blessing, that which comes out of the line of Abraham...the Christ, Jesus, who Paul clearly states is God. Both Divine and Human!!

Tough Questions/Difficult Answers
Is God fair?
Biblically: Yes and No!
God says through Creation and Conscience, I AM HERE!!!
A God of Justice would leave people and not save them!
Ex. It is like a dog who lives in a garage. And whenever a storm comes, it runs outside to the tiny little dog house, even though it feels safer in the garage.
The owner goes out in the rain and stands on the porch under the overhang and calls to the dog, but the dog wont move. A Just owner would leave the dog, "It's your fault for running out there!" An owner like God walks out to the dog and brings it back into the garage!
Question #1: Why do some believe and others do not?
A) Because God is a Sovereign, active, choosing God.
Vs. 7 "And not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but 'Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.'" Not Children of the flesh, but of the promised Messiah!
Vs. 10-12 "And not only so, but also when Revecca had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad -- in order that God's purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of his call -- she was told, 'the older will serve the younger.'"
Both children of the same woman, but one child of promise, not of the flesh.
Question #2: Doesn't this truth make God unjust?
A) He is more than just, He is merciful!
Vs. 15 "For he says to Moses, 'I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.'"
It is Gods choice!!!
Exodus 31-33:19
B) He is more than just, He is purposeful.
Exodus 9:16 God speaking to Pharaoh: "But for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth."
This was to display Gods power and to have His name proclaimed in all the earth!
2 Nations made peace with Israel because of what they had heard from Egypt.
God's sovereign choices always accomplish the Greater Good.
Question #3: How can He hold us responsible?
A) He can, He does, and you have no right to argue (vs. 20-21)
Both God and Pharaoh hardened Pharaoh's heart!
B) Human freedom and Divind Sovereignty BOTH exist!
It is NOT Double Predestination!!!!
Vs. 22-23 "What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory--" God was and is ready to Judge those who reject Him. He for now chooses to wait.
Tough Questions/Difficult Answers
Glorious Results/Easy Choices
God has built fenses around our lives and we escape, but in His grace he brings us back! Just like the dog story above!
But how about Frisky escapes the Garage...Do you go and look for him? or leave him to be? God goes after us!!!
God will step into some peoples lives and save some, because we would all reject Him if He didn't!!
One day men from all Nations/People Groups will be saved!
Choose you this day to believe!!!
You may not get another chance!
