Romans 8:18-25

Romans 8:18-25
ESV
Future Glory
"For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience."

NASB
"For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body. For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it."

Stephanus 1550 New Testament

The Long Version:
Romans 8:18-25
Future Glory

18. For I consider/reckon that the suffering of this present/now time/season are not worth/worthy comparing with the glory/praise/honor that is to be revealed/uncovered to us.

19. For the creation waits with eager longing/strained expectancy for the revealing/uncovering of the sons of God.

20. For the creation was subjected/to obey to futility/vanity/emptiness/no purpose/uselessness, not willingly/voluntarily, but because of him who subjected/to obey it, in hope/expectation/anticipation

21. that the creation itself will be set/to make free/exempted from liability free/not a slave/not under restraint from its bondage/slavery to decay/distruction/corruption and obtain the freedom/liberty of the glory/praise/honor of the children of God.

22. For we know that the whole/all/every creation has been groaning/moaning/sighing (within oneself) together/with birth pans/pain/distress in the pains/with birth pangs/pain/distress of childbirth until now.

23. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits/the beginning of a sacrifice of the Spirit, groan/moan/sigh (within oneself) inwardly as we wait/expect eagerly for the adoption as sons, the redemption/release effected by ransom of our bodies.

24. For in this hope/expectation/anticipation we were saved. Now hope/expectation/anticipation that is seen is not hope/expectation/anticipation. For who hopes/expects/anticipates what he sees?

25. But if we hope/expect/anticipate for what we do not see, we wait/expect eagerly for it with patience/perseverance/a patient enduring/staying behind.

My Comments:

18. Paul is saying that what we are going through now (wars, earthquakes, hurricanes, tsumani's ect.), they are not worth even comparing to what we will receive when Christ returns.
James agrees with Paul!
James 1:2-4
Testing of Your Faith
"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing."

We are in the process of being perfected, attaining what is to be revealed!!!

19. All of creation, not just those who are saved, wait eagerly...longing for what God has in store for us!
"Uncovering of the sons of God"
This is refering to all those who believe in Jesus Christ...uncovering is the revealing of our new and perfected bodies!

20. Creation is also longing because it was forced into this state when Adam chose to disobey God. Genesis 1-3. Creation was perfect, but through the fall it became cursed and was forced into a fallen state.

21. And creation itself will be set free from this fallen state just like us, who believe in Christ Jesus.

22.All of creation is groaning and in pain in this fallen state.

23. Even those who have Christ Jesus, we are also groaning and in pain in our fallen states, we are all (creation included) waiting eagerly for our redemption -- we have been bought by a price...Jesus death on the cross!

24. In this redemption is our hope! The price has been paid, the Holy Spirit has been given to us as a down payment or promise, and we are waiting for our full salvation (that we will receive when the LORD Jesus Christ returns for all those who confess Him as their personal Lord and Savior), our glorified bodies and eternal life with Christ in Heaven!
We hope or anticipate because we are saved, but have not been glorified! For if we had already been glorified we could not hope! Who hopes for something that they already have??? No one!!!

25. But if we hope or anticipate what we do not have yet we wait for what has been promised eagerly and with patience and perseverance!

More thoughts:

"Life in the Spirit" the Kingdom of God

1. It is a Walk! (vs. 4-13)
For Christians there will always be two natures battling each other.
A. Those who are of the flesh think fleshly.
B. Those who are of the Spirit think Spiritually.
It is a Daily, Hourly, Minute by Minute battle that we fight, and can only win through the strength of Christ!
It's our way or Christ's way...we must choose everyday!

2. It is a Witness! (vs 14-17)
The Holy Spirit witnesses to us, that we belong to God! That we are adopted as Sons and Daughters!!!
We need to keep ourselves aware of this!!!
Jude reminds us in the 2nd vs of his book: "To those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept for Jesus Christ:"
And in vs 20 and 21. "But you, beloved, build yourselves up in your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit; keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life."
How do we keep ourselves in the love of God? Can we step outside of that love? Can we make God not love us?
These questions arise from that phrasing, but what is meant in this verse is that we must hold fast to His Love...grab ahold and never let go no matter what may happen. His love is neverending and we must always remind ourselves that God loves us!
Roamsn 8:28
"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose."

We will also inherit things!
A. We will inherit Eternal Life with Christ Jesus -- this comes later and lasts forever!
B. We will inherit the sufferings of Christ -- this is now but momentary!

3. It is a Wait (vs 18-25)
A. Our redemption is worth waiting for! We already have the first taste of it, a down payment of what is to come!
And we wait and groan and long for our full redemption!!!!
B. The redemption of the earth -- it will also be recreated and be perfect once again!

It is a wonderful life of looking forward to our Home! With Christ in Heaven!

Bill Bright understood this:
He called it "Controlled and Empowered by Christ/The Holy Spirit
The Spiritfilled Life!

1. A life surrendered to Christ
2. A life filled by Christ
3. A life transformed by Christ
4. A life lead and directed by Christ
5. A life empowered by Christ

Here is a map of a directional choice:

Life (point of choice):
1. Direction A. Christ's way
Direction B. My way

Point of choice on Christ's way
2. Direction A. Continue on Christ's way
Direction B. Turn and head back to My way

It is all about a source choice:
Will I do things Christ's way or my way? Who is leading my life?
My way leads to death.
Christ's way leads to Life!!!

My way is a life lead by My strength.
Christ's way is a life lead by Christ's strength!

This choice comes up Daily, Hourly, and even Minute by Minute!

What will be the overall direction of your life?
Your way? or Christ's Way?

In Christ,

David
