Romans 8:1-8

Romans 8:1-8
ESV
Life in the Spirit
"There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

NASB
Deliverance from Bondage
"Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God."

Stephanus 1550 New Testament

The Long Version:
Romans 8:1-8
Life in the Spirit/Deliverance from Bondage

1. There is therefore now no condemnation/penalty/judgment against (for) those who are in Christ Jesus.

2. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free/exempted you from liability (from obeying the written law) in Christ Jesus from the law of sin/failure and death (the written law).

3. For God has done what the law, weakened/made feeble by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful/failing flesh and for sin/failure (as an offering for sin itself), he condemned/gave judgment against sin/failure in the flesh,

4. in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled/complete in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

5. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds/have understanding/think on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds/have understanding/think on the things of the Spirit.

6. To set the mind/thoughts/understanding on the flesh is death, but the mind/thoughts/understanding set on the Spirit is life and peace.

7. For the mind/thoughts/understanding that is set on the flesh is hostile/at emnity with/hates God, for it does not submit/subject/rank under/obey (to) God's law; indeed, it cannot.

8. Those who are in the flesh cannot please/fit together with God.

My Comments:

1. Paul has brought us to the two conclusions: 1. You can choose to be judged by a Righteous God and held according to the standards of the written law...which leads to condemnation and death. or 2. You can choose to submit to the authority of Jesus Christ and Lord and Savior of your life.
Here Paul states that if you are in the second group...the group that submits their lives to Christ, there is no condemnation!!!

2. Living according to the Law of the Spirit...through Christ Jesus, makes us exempt from the judgment that comes through sin and the law.

3. The law could not bring us sinners into a right relationship with himself! So, to accomplish this, He send Jesus as a human...in the likeness of sinful flesh, as a sin offering or sacrifice for all sin!
Because He was without sin His entire life -- Hebrews 4:15 "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin." -- He was the perfect offering to God for the sins of the world.

4. Jesus kept the law perfectly and completely! Now because He lives within us (if you have accepted His Lordship over your life and have submitted your life to Him -- if you can say verbally that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior of your life, that He is God Almighty), the law that He kept is also comlete within us!!!

5. If we live and obey the desires of the our flesh, we will constantly be thinking about the things of the flesh! But, if we live according to the Spirit, we will constantly be thinking about the things of the Spirit!!

6. And if we think about the things of the flesh, that leads us to death...not just death in this life, but also eternal separation from God. But, if we think about the things of the Spirit, that leads to life (eternal life with God) and peace with God!!!!

7. This is because the mind that thinks about the flesh is hostile towards God, it hates God!!! Because it doesn't submit to His authority, it will not obey Him, it cannot obey Him.

8. Those who live according to the flesh and obey its desires, cannot please God...they cannot partake with God in anything!!!

Now you may be asking, "If I live according to the flesh, I can't please God. So how do I please God?"

1 Thessalonians 4:1 and Hebrews 11:6 explain the answer to that question.

1 Thessalonians 4:1 "Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more."

Paul taught the Thessalonians how to live in order to please God. If we study Pauls teaching (along with the teaching of Jesus Christ, God Himself) we can live in a way that pleases God!!!

Hebrews 11:6 "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him."

Here we see that if we live a life without faith, we cannot please God. So a life of faith in God would please Him. Combine that with the teachings of Christ and Paul and through the power of the Holy Spirit we can live a life pleasing to God!!!

In Christ,

David
