Romans 6:20-23
Romans 6:20-23
ESV
"When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
NASB
"For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. Therefore what benefit were you then deriving from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the outcome of those things is death. But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Stephanus 1550 New Testament

The Long Version:
Romans 6:20-23
20. When you were slaves of sin/failure, you were free from/not restrained by righteousness/right living/a right relationship with God.
21. But what fruit/benefit were you getting at that time from the things/previous thoughts/actions of which you are now ashamed/disgraced of? The end/outcome of those things is death.
22. But now that you have been set free from sin/failure and have become slaves of God, the fruit/benefit you get leads to/results in sanctification/to make holy and its end/outcome, eternal life.
23. For the wages/provisions/that which is earned of sin/failure/missing God's mark of perfection is death, but the free gift/free gift of grace/unmerritted favor/unearned kindness of God is eternal life in/through Christ Jesus our Lord.
My Comments:
20. Again, you can only serve one master...sin or God.
21. There is nothing to gain from serving sin...only death comes from sin.
22. There is much to gain from being a slave to God...Sactification...being made Holy like God is Holy and Eternal life with Him in Heaven.
23. What you earn from sin is only death...not only death in this world, but eternal seperation from God and Eternal Wrath and Punishment in Hell,
BUT there is Good news,
The FREE GIFT of God is Eternal life...an eternity with and in the Presence of Almighty God through the Sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
In Christ,
David
How do you want me to do this?
Application Point:
1. Vs. 20-21 Remember what you were saved from (So we don't forget how GOOD GOD's Grace is!)
And Fix our Eyes on Christ!
Hebrews 12:1-2
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God."
2. Vs. 22 Remember the Power of the Gospel!
It is all Suficiant!
3. Vs. 23 Preach ourselves the Gospel everyday!!!
Don't just be a Sunday Christian, take up your Cross, leave everything behind and Follow Christ everyday of your life!!!!
Is Jesus your Master?
2 types of people live in this world!
A. People who are slaves to Sin
B. People who are slaves to Righteousness!
Whom do you Serve?
Whom do you want to Serve?
It is your choice...there is no sitting on the fence!
In Christ,
David
What really strikes me about this verse is that you are going to be a slave to something- there isn't a choice in that. You will be a slave to God or a slave to sin- there isn't any room for the "self". This runs totally contrary to everything our culture would like us to believe about ourselves. WE are not in charge of ourselves- our desires or our gods or our God will direct our steps.
Seems to make the choice easier, doesn't it?
