Romans 5:12-14
ESV
Death in Adam, Life in Christ
"Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned-- for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come."
NASB
"Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned--for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come."
Stephanus 1550 New Testament

The Long Version:
Romans 5:12-14
Death in Adam, Life in Christ
12. Therefore, just as sin/failure/missing the mark of perfection set by God came into the world through/on account of one man/human, and death through/on account of sin/failure/missing the mark of perfection set by God, and so death spread to/went throughout all mankind because all sinned/missed the mark of perfection set by God--
13 for sin/failure/missing the mark of perfection set by God indeed was in the world before the law of God was given, but sin/failure/missing the mark of perfection set by God is not charged to one's account/imputed where there is no law.
14. Yet death reigned/was king from Adam to Moses, even over/upon those whose sinning/doing wrong/missing the mark of perfection set by God was not like/in the likeness of the transgression/offense/sin of Adam, who was a type/mark/impression of the one who was to come.
My Comments:
12. Paul is stating that Sin came into the world through Adam. And through Sin came death.
And sin and death spread throughout all mankind...because all mankind came from Adam.
13. Sin was in the world even before God gave His written Law to the world through the 10 Commandments...The Torah (Law for Life) the first 5 books of the Old Testament...
But sin cannot be charged to one's account if there is no Law to reveal the sin.
How can you steal something...if there is no such thing as stealing? Until a law defines it as wrong...it isn't wrong.
14. But, sin and death through sin reigned from the time Adam committed the first sin through the time of Moses when the law was given to mankind.
Sin was upon mankind but it was not like the sin of Adam...Adam was told not to do something (don't eat from the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil) what did he do? He ate from it! He broke the one law that he was given...but the sin of the world between the time Adam sinned and when the law was given to Moses is not like that of Adam. Adam broke a direct command from God, but that one sin was transmitted through his flesh to all of his children and on down the line.
And Adam was an impression of the one who was to come...Jesus Christ.

David

Clarification on My final statement in Vs. 13.
"Until a law defines it as wrong...it isn't wrong."
Should be read, until a law defines something as wrong...we don't necessarily know or understand that it is wrong.
Our conscience helps us to understand, but the law is concrete and doesn't change. We can justify things even though our conscience says they are wrong, but we cannot justify breaking the law.
Also,
Sin in this case is like a disease.
It is like the HIV virus!
If a couple decides to have a baby, and one or both of them is HIV positive, the baby will be HIV positive.
That child didn't necessarily do anything to receive the virus, other than being born from one who had the virus.
In the same way, sin was a part of who Adam and Eve were because they broke the one command that God gave them.
Therefore, their children, just by being born, were infected with sin.
Sin brings death...even though people from Adam to Moses (time without the Law until the Law was given) didn't break the Law, they inherited sin like a disease.
Once the Law was given...there has only been One who has not broken any part of the law...Jesus Christ.
