Romans 4:13-17

Romans 4:13-17
ESV
The Promise Realized Through Faith
"For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression. That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring--not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, as it is written, 'I have made you the father of many nations'--in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist."

NASB
"For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith. For if those who are of the Law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise is nullified; for the Law brings about wrath, but where there is no law, there also is no violation. For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, (as it is written, 'A FATHER OF MANY NATIONS HAVE I MADE YOU') in the presence of Him whom he believed, even God, who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist."

Stephanus 1550 New Testament

The Long Version:
Romans 4:13-17

13. For the promise to Abraham and his offspring/decendants that he would be heir/inheritor of the nations did not come on account of/because of the law but on account of/because of the rightness of confidence in God.

14. For if it is only those who obey the law who are to be the heirs/inheritors, Confidence in God is abolished/rendered inoperative and the promise is void/empty.

15. For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no going against the law.

16. That is why it depends on Confidence in God, in order that the promise may be according to Grace/Unmeritted favor/unearned kindness and be firm/secure/guaranteed to all his offspring/decendants -- not only to those who obey the law but also to the one who shares/has the same Confidence in God as Abraham, who is the father of us all,

17. as it is written, 'I have made you the father of many nations/races' -- in the presence of God in whom he trusted/had confidence in, who makes alive those who were dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.

My Comments:

13. God told Abraham that he would be the father of many nations...here Paul is saying that God did this not because Abraham obeyed God's law (wasn't given for another couple hundered years -- to Moses), but because Abraham trusted that what God said, He would carry out.

14. And if only those who obeyed the law were the ones to inherit this promise...Faith in God is pretty dumb and trusting the promise of God is dumber...because you don't have to trust...you can earn it through the law.

15. But the law of God shows us just where we fall short of God's standards...and in doing so brings God's wrath upon us. But how can God show His righteous anger with a sinful people if there is no law, because were there is no law, there is no sinning against the law.

16. That is why the promise depends on Faith! So that God can show us His Grace and that His promise may be Guaranteed to all of Abrahams decendants! Those who chose to have faith in God and those who chose to work for it.

17. God told Abraham that he was the father of many nations, and this was in the very presence of God, who can give life to the dead things, and bring to existence things that have never before existed.

I would like to make a point about verse 16.
If a person can completely 100% obey all the laws that God has put forth in the Old Testament. That person is perfect and has earned eternal life.
Now let me ask you some questions:
1. Have you ever stolen anything? A pack of gum, time at work from your employer, or maybe something from family or friends?
2. Have you ever lied? Yes even a little tiny white lie...it is still not truth.
3. Have you ever murdered? Remember that Jesus said, if you even hate your brother in your heart, you have commited murder. Have you ever hated anyone?
4. Have you ever committed Adultery? Jesus also said, that if you even look at a women with lust in your heart you have committed Adultery with her in your heart. Have you ever looked at a women with lust?
How did you do? I know that I had to answer Yes to all 4 questions. And that is only 4 of the 650 some commands of the Old Testament Law. I have failed! Everyone has Failed!
That is why the promise depends on Faith/Confidence in God...because we all fail at the law!
God provided a way through Jesus Christ His only Son...the true heir of the Promise to Abraham.
Now Jesus was not plan B! Ohhh no!
Listen to this from 1 Peter 1:18-21
"knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for your sake, who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God."

Jesus was foreknown before the foundation of the world!
This was always Plan A!!!!

Faith in God through Jesus Christ our Lord! (+ nothing)

Jesus Christ upheld the law 100% and He died on the cross as a sin offering to God for our sins.

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord and you believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, 'Everyone who believes in Him will not be put to shame.'
Romans 10:9-11

In Christ,

David
