Romans 4:9-12

Romans 4:9-12
ESV
"Is this blessing then only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? We say that faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness. How then was it counted to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised. He received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness would be counted to them as well, and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised."

NASB
"Is this blessing then on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say, 'FAITH WAS CREDITED TO ABRAHAM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.' How then was it credited? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised; and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them, and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which he had while uncircumcised."

The Long Version:
Romans 4:9-12

9. Is this blessing/declaration of blessedness then only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? We say that confidence in God was credited/given to Abraham as being right before God.

10. How then was it credited/given to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after but before he was circumcised.

11. He received/was given/took upon himself the sign/mark of circumcision as a seal/signet of his right standing with God that he had by confidence in God while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was to make him the father of all who have confidence in God while still cuncircumcised, so that being right with God would be credited/given to them as well,

12. and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but who also walk/follow by the rule of the same confidence in God that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

My Comments:

9. Paul asks if the blessing of a right standing before God is only for those who are apart of the old covenant.
Circumcision was the sign that the Jewish people took upon themselves to show others that they were apart of that covenant between God and His chosen people.
Paul answers his own question...saying that a right standing with God was given to Abraham by God.

10. Paul pauses in his answer to ask another question...when was Abraham given this right standing with God? Was it before he was circumcised or after?

11. Paul finishes his answer...Abraham took the sign of circumcision as a seal of his right standing before God through his confidence/faith in God while he was uncircumcised.
So Paul is saying that a right standing with God comes through Faith alone, then after Faith and the declaration of a right standing with God, one takes upon himself the outward seal of that faith.
This was so that Abraham would be the father of many nations! The father of all who have faith/confidence in God even while being uncircumcised. This was so that being right with God could be for all people, not just God's chosen,

12. And it also make Abraham the father of those who are already circumcised, but not only circumcised, they must walk by the same rule of faith that Abraham had before his circumcision.

We see here that Faith/Confidence in God is what God looks at. It is not anything that we do that gets us into a right standing with God. Only Faith in God and Trust in His promises! And His greatest promise of all....Eternal Life through Jesus Christ our Lord!

As I have said before, circumcision was an outward expression of an inward commitment. The act of circumcision did not save a Jewish person, as evidenced in this text it was their Faith/Trust in God.
The same can be said for Baptism. Baptism is an outward expression of an inward commitment! Baptism does not save a person, only Faith.

I do want to say that both Baptism and Circumcision however are commanded! We should do them, but when? Like Abraham! He was circumcised after his Faith in God. In the same way a Believe in Jesus Christ our Lord, the only Son of God, should be Baptized after they have Faith. After they Confess with their mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord and believe in their hearts that God raised him from the dead.

In Christ,

David

Hey Dave,
Just a question for you. You compared baptism with circumcision, which I agree with. However, then you ended your comments saying that both are commandments to be partaken in after faith in Christ. Doesn't baptism replace circumcision in the new covenant?

Yes it does.
That is what I meant.
Circumcision was the commant of the old covenant and Baptism is the command of the new covenant.

Circumcision is no longer a requirement.

Thanks for the clarification
