Romans 3:9-20

Romans 3:9-20
ESV
No One Is Righteous
"What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, as it is written: 'None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.' 'Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.' 'The venom of asps is under their lips.' 'Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.' 'Their feet are swift to shed blood; in their paths are ruin and misery, and the way of peace they have not known.' 'There is no fear of God before their eyes.' Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin."

NASB
"What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin; as it is written, 'THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE; THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD; ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE.' 'THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE, WITH THEIR TONGUES THEY KEEP DECEIVING,' 'THE POISON OF ASPS IS UNDER THEIR LIPS'; 'WHOSE MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS'; 'THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD, DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS, AND THE PATH OF PEACE THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN.' 'THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES.' Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God; because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin."

The long version:
Romans 3:9-20

9. "What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already discussed that all, both Jew and Greeks, are under sin,

10. as it is written: 'None is right before God, no, not one;

11. no one understands; no one seeds out God.

12. Everyone has turned aside; at once they have become worthless/uselss; no one does good/excellent/upright things, not even one.'

13. 'Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.' 'The poison of asps is under their lips.'

14. Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.'

15. 'Their feet are swift to shed blood;

16. in their paths are distruction and misery,

17. and the path/way of peace they have not known/recognized/perceived.'

18. There is no fear/terror of God in the presence of their eyes.'

19. Now we understand that whatever the law of God says it speaks to these who are with/under the law of God, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole creation may be brought to trail before God.

20. For by works of God's Law no human will be declared righteous/made right with God in God's sight/before God, since throught the law of God come recognition/understanding/knowing exactly what missing the mark of perfection truly is.

My Comments:

9. Paul is just reiterating to his audiance that Everyone is under sin. He is making sure that they get this point! This is the beginning of the Gospel...that everyone is Godless, Lifeless, and Hopeless. The Law makes sure that we know this!

10. Paul refers back to the O.T. that No one can stand before God, not even one!

11. We can't stand before God because we don't understand God, we are so lost that we can't even seek God!
This makes me wonder about all those people who think they have a faith...but are chasing after (honestly) themselves! They think and are fooled into thinking that they are seeking God...but they can't seek God!

12. Every single person has turned from God...and in doing so become Godless, Lifeless, and Hopeless.

13. Out of their mouths comes death and they deceive others with their messages of a false gosple.

14. They curse others and have bitterness towards others.
Note: the greek word for curses cannot be translated...I encourage you to look at what it's use actually is!!! It is more of a feeling than anything!

15. They are quick to shed blood, but this could also mean that they are quick to hate others...Christ said, If you hate your brother you have murdered him.

16. These peoples lives are filled with misery and distruction. They will never have a full life.

17. They don't know how to live full lives and be peaceful with one another...they are always looking for ways that they are better than others.

18. This is a biggy! They don't have a fear of God! Even Christians...God's children, heirs with Christ...Have a reverent fear of God! Yes, we are His children and He loves us dearly! But, in the flash of an eye, He could destroy us. And these people have no fear of God!!! No fear of what will happen on Judgement Day!!!! That is a very scary thought!

19. The law speaks to those who are under the law! But as Paul reminded us in verse 9, we all have the law, call it conscience or whatever, but it is written on everyones hearts! This is so that everyone, all of creation can be judged by God!

20. No one can stand right before God based on the Law! Because the Law only reveals to us just how depraved we are, Just how Godless, and Lifeless, and Hopeless we are!

Vs. 10-12 talk to us about Godlessness! No one seeks Gods righteousness! 1st Commandment -- Have no other God's before me!
The impulse/draw/pull away from God is so strong, we cannot beat it!

Vs. 13-18 talk to us about Lifelessness! The impulse/pull away from God affects our body. It infects our lives and relationships with others. We are Lifeless with out God.
Christ said, I came that men may have life!

Vs. 19-20 talks to us about Hopelessness! This sin problem goes deeper than the law! We try to justify ourselves and our actions! "I'm not that bad, just look at these other people!"
Sin separates us from God and the Law shows us where we went wrong!

One scary thought about other religions...we wont reach out to God for Life and Hope and Christ, if we already think that we have them from some other source! The only source of Life and Hope is Jesus Christ!

But now the Good News!!! Jesus Christ! Vs. 21 and on!!!

In Christ,

David

Dave,
You're right on in your analysis. One thought I had though that I'm curious as to your take on it...do you think that being "quick to shed blood" could also mean "quick to lead others into the same sins we are partaking of"? I see this as a possible interpretation of it because the penalty for sin is death. So in essence, by leading others into sin by our own actions, we are also leading them into death (although we really don't need to since all go into the path of sin on their own). Just a thought.

Matt-

I think it means it pretty much how it sounds. This scripture is talking about the total depravity of man. "No one seeks for God." "Everyone has turned aside...they have become worthless." "No one does good, not even one."

If we just turn on the 10 o'clock news or watch CNN we see blood being shed everyday. I think because of man's depravity there is a natural gravitation towards murder and war.

We especially see this in country's that have either a lack of stable government or have a militent radical ruler. In coutries like our own we may have less because of our law enforcement in place, but we certainly aren't without our own bloodshed even in America.

So I think we are to take that verse at face value. However people do encourage others in sin even though it leads to death. Romans 1:32.

That's my thought on the matter.

Jacob,
I agree with that. I was just throwing out another possibility. There are so many different angles to scripture do to it being the "living word". I just had a thought that really hit me as cool so I thought I'd share it. You're dead on about the face value of it as well. Satan's ultimate goal is always to bring about death because that's his only way of making absolutely sure we never can receive Christ.

Hey guys!
Matt, you asked, "do you think that being 'quick to shed blood' could also mean 'quick to lead others into the same sins we are partaking of'?"

I agree with what Jacob has said, that we can take this scripture at face value...it means exactly what it says!
I also think that we could take it deeper. As my comment on vs. 32 from post Romans 1:28-32 (there are two 31's it is the second one) says, the penalty for sin is more sin and encouraging others to do the same.
Since Sin is a separation from God (Spiritual death) I would say yes.
But then again there is no blood shed in a Spiritual death...but I think we can look at it both ways based off of the text.

Thanks for your comments!

In Christ,

David
