Romans 2:25-29

Romans 2:25-29
ESV
"For circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision. So, if a man who is uncircumcised keeps the precepts of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? Then he who is physically uncircumcised but keeps the law will condemn you who have the written code and circumcision but break the law. For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God."

NASB
"For indeed circumcision is of value if you practice the Law; but if you are a transgressor of the Law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. So if the uncircumcised man keeps the requirements of the Law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? And he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the Law, will he not judge you who though having the letter of the Law and circumcision are a transgressor of the Law? For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God."

Stephanus 1550 New Testament

The long version:
Romans 2: 25-29

25. For circumcision is of benefit if you obey/practice/do what the law requires, but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision.

26. So, if an uncircumcised man guards/watches/keeps the requirements of God's law, will not his uncircumcision be considered as circumcision?

27. Then he who is by nature uncircumcised but completes/fulfills the law of God will condemn you who have the law of God and circumcision but break the law of God.

28. For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical.

29. But a Jew is one inwardly/hidden, and circumcision is of the Heart, by the Spirit of God, not by the written law of God. His praise is not from man but from God.

My comments:

Circumcision: Was a sign of the covenant that the Nation of Israel had with God. It was a very important thing to have done. The equivelant in the New Covenant is Baptizm.

25. Paul is still adressing Jews only. He says that the only way that circumcision is of benefit, is if you can complete/fulfill the law 100%! If you can't it is like you were never circumcised in the first place.

26. But, if some guy who isn't circumcised (a part of the covenant) keeps the law of God, it is as if He was circumcised.
Sounds to me like the only real requirement is the Law...and that circumcision is a symbol that one is under the covenant of the law!

27. So, if this uncircumcised guy fulfills the law and is concidered righteous, you who are circumcised but break the law will also be considered unrighteous.
Sounds again like the only thing that matters in keeping the law!

28. Paul is saying that just because you talk the talk does not make you right with God!

29. You must also walk the walk! The Spirit of God will circumcision your heart not the law.
Again the law shows us of our sin. The law ineffect condemns everyone!
But if you somehow can keep the law...your praise doesn't come from men, it comes from God.

Sounds a lot like Jesus! He fulfilled the law and was exaulted to the highest place!
Paul so far has just been ripping us to shreds! And in the first part of Chapter 3 it is going to get even worse...but the good news is coming!!!
We must first be cut down to our lowest point before we will ever see our need!
We are helpless sinners, we can't do anything on our own. That is why Jesus came to die and rise from the dead!
We need Him, we are in desperate need of a Savior, and Jesus is the One who can Save!

In Christ,

David

It never ceases to amaze me how many people still believe in works after reading passages such as this. Verses 28 and 29 are so perfectly clear that nothing comes from our own work, but only in the sufficiency of Christ and His sacrifice. Also, Eph. 2:8-9, "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast." Yes, there is definitely a works aspect of LIVING the Christian life. Ephesians goes on to say in verse 10, "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them." Also James 2:17, "Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself."

This BY NO MEANS is saying that we need to do works as a part of our salvation. However, as a result of the salvation that BEGINS AND ENDS in Christ, He changes us within and gives us a desire to live a life that is pleasing to the Father.

Maybe it's just me, but I have to wonder if those that still believe in a works-based salvation are reading the same bible that I am?

Keep serving the King Dave.

Many people think that they are saved by association alone!

Don't gasp at those with gross sins!
Gasp at the shirt giving church goer who was baptized.

One is not saved because they go to such and such a church or because they were baptized as an infant...Salvation only come through Jesus Christ and Saving Faith in what He has accomplished!
We will get to that in a few chapters.

Circumcision = a wedding ring between God and the Jews.
But it was just like a wedding ring on an adulterous finger.

We must watch the Spiritual Condition of our Hearts!!!
1. Stop our scheduals and meet with God!!!
2. Meet with God on a regualr basis!
3. Get an accountability partner and be open and honest with the about strougles and sin issues...and allow them to speak truth into your life!

Let us by the Power of the Spirit, watch our Hearts!

In Christ,

David
