Romans 1:18-23

Romans 1:18-23
ESV
God's Wrath on Unrighteousness
"For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles."

NASB
Unbelief and Its Consequences
"For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures."

Here's the long translation:
Romans 1:18-23

18. For the wrath of God is uncovered/made known from Heaven upon all ungodliness and unrighteousness of manking, who by their unrighteousness bold back the truth.

19. For what can be perceived about God is made visible/clear within them, because God has made it visible/clear to them.

20. For His invisible qualities, namely, His everlasting power/might/strength and Godly Nature, have been discerned/made known clearly, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they can give account of themselves without excuss.

21. For even though they recognized/perceived God, they did not render Him or give Him glorious esteem as God nor were they thankful to Him, but they became foolish in their reasoning, and their non-understanding hearts were darkened.

22. Reporting/Claiming to be wise, they became foolish/stupid,

23. and exchanged the Honor/Glory of the imperishable/undestroyable God for figures made in the likeness of perishable/destroyable humans/mankind and winged/flying, four-footed, and creeping things/animals.

And now for my comments:

18. God is compassionate yes, but He is also just and therefore must punnish all things that fall short of His standard of Perfection! And God has made that known to all men, but because of their unrighteousness/lack of perfection, men try to hold back the truth about God...The Gospel of Jesus Christ!

19. God has made all the men can understand about God clear to us.

20. And even the things that it is hard for us humans to understand, God has made clear to us through the Creation around us. So that all people can give an account of themselves to God without making excusses.

21. People have always known in their hearts that God is there! But they choose to reject Him as God and refuse to give Him the Honor, Glory, and Thanks that is His. In rejecting God, they have become foolish in their thinking and continuing down this path their hearts have become hard toward God.

22. These people claim to be the wise people of the earth, but they are truly foolish and stupid.

23. Because they Give Honor and Glory to images of men/birds/animals/and creatures (these images don't do anything and the things that they look like all die) rather than God (who is everlasting and cannot be hurt, sick, or destroyed!) (we will see later in this letter that they are weightless -- meaning that they are empty and are actually nothing)

In Christ,

David

This comment is for Vs. 18-32

We need the Gospel!!!

God is Holy and He pours out Wrath on Sin.

All of Mankind has sinned!

Sin is not the thing we should fear most!!! It is God's Wrath!!!

God's wrath is not like Human anger.
It isn't uncontrolled, explosive anger.
It is Settled, Strong, and Controlled.
Righteousness and Wrath go together, hand in hand.

God's wrath unfolds in a certain progression.
1. God reveals himself to mankind.
In General Revelation, Plainly seen in Nature and our Conscience..but this is not enough to save us!
In Special Revelation -- Jesus and the Word of God..this is enough for salvation!
2. The truth is suppressed by mankind.
We push it away and choose not to believe it, "I don't care."
Atheism --- put nicely is a strong disliking of God.
Luther once said, "God loves sinners, but punishes Unbelievers."
3. Mankind worships idols.
Don't do this...no good will ever come from it!!!

Once this happens, God pours out His wrath.

Once way wrath is poured out, is by God giving mankind over to the consequences of our actions.
God gave them over in vs. 24-28
God abandond them and withdrew His restraining Hand that was over them.
Sin becomes who they are, they become depraved and encourage others in sin.

God hates only one thing!
SIN!!!!
Nothing else, not the person, only the SIN!!!!

Our response both individually and congregationally to God needs to be, a continued holding of the Bible as our Ultimate Standard...and exulting Christ above all else!

When Darkness prevails, People are most ready to turn from their sins to Christ!!!

In Christ,

David
