Romans 2:6-11

Romans 2:6-11
ESV
"He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. For God shows no partiality."

NASB
"who WILL RENDER TO EACH PERSON ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS: to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation. There will be tribulation and distress for every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek, but glory and honor and peace to everyone who does good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For there is no partiality with God."

The long version:
Romans 1:6-11

6. He (God) will give back to each person according to his works:

7. to those who by patient enduring in doing good works seek praise/glory and honor and incorrptibility, he will give agelong/eternal life;

8. but for those who are self-centered and rivalrous and disobey/are disobedient to the truth, but have confidence in injustice/unrighteousness, there will be wrath and a whirlwind of rage.

9. There will be afflictions and difficulty for every soul of man who does evil/bad, first to the Jewish People and also to the Gentile,

10. but praise/glory and honor and peace for all who work out good, first to the Jewish people and also to the Gentiles.

11. For God has respect for everyone and treats everyone the same.

My Comments:

For this to make sense we must look at some other verses: Paul is quoting from the O.T.
Psalm 62:12
"and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love. For you will render to a man according to his work."
Proverbs 24:12
"If you say, 'Behold, we did not know this, 'does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it, and will he not repay man according to his work?"
Job 34:11
"For according to the work of a man he will repay him, and according to his ways he will make it befall him."
"He repays a man for what he has done; he brings upon him what his conduct deserves."
I think this version is a little more clear!
This is the one that I believe Paul is quoting...we will come back to this verse!!!
On to some of the N.T. verses that say this:
Matthew 16:27
"For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done."
1 Corinthians 3:8
"He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor."
Romans 11:33-35
"Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! 'For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?' 'Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?'"
Revelation 2:23
"and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you as your works deserve."

6. I believe that Paul is quoting Job 34:11 listed above.
God will pay back each person according to what their works have earned them!!! I fully believe this statement to be true! What has each person done in this life? What will God pay us back?
Paul tells us in Romans 3:23 and 6:23
"for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,"
"For the wages of sin is death,"
Yes sirry...we have all sinned and according to God's standards we will earn Death...not only physical death (that was earned through the fall) but Spiritual Death (separation from God for all of eternity)!!!!

7. Many people here would make the case that we must have good works + faith in order to have God give us eternal life. However, based upon Romans 3:23 and 6:23 there is no good works that we can do! We are doomed...but Romans 6:23 doesn't stop at death, there is a , and the verse continues "but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord." God sent His Son Jesus who was the Christ (the Messiah) to come here and live a perfect life! He was the only one who did any "good works" and through belief in Him and His promises He imparts Righteousness to us. When God looks at us, He sees Christ and what Christ has done (if you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ), not what we ourselves have done.

8. But, for all those who do not have Christ Jesus...all those who are self-centered and disobey God, God will pour out the wrath and rage that He has been storing up...He has been very patient I would say...but soon a day will come when all that wrath and righteous anger will be released upon the unrighteous.

9. With this wrath and anger there will be afflictions and difficulties...I would say that is putting it mildly! This will be poured out First to the Jewish unbelievers. Why? Because they are God's chosen people, the first ones who had an opportunity to believe in Christ. And second to the rest of the world.

10. But for all those who are believers...covered by the Blood of the Lamb, covered by Christ, there will be honor, praise, and glory. We will be lifted up, First to the Jewish people, because again they are God chosen and had the first opportunity to believe and next to the rest of the believers.
Again, the phrase "work out good", good only can be done by God, the ony working out of good is for a believer to accept the Jesus Christ is the Messiah, God came to earth and Died on a cross and if we believe in Him and His promises we will be saved!

11. God doesn't play favorites! If you don't believe Jesus, you will get your just reward...eternal torment. If you do believe Jesus, you will get your just reward...eternity with God in Heaven.

In Christ,

David
