Romans 1:28-32
Romans 1:28-32
ESV
"And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God's decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them."
NASB
"And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them."

The longer version:
Romans 1:28-32
28. And because they did not approve to recognize or understand God, God handed them over to a rejected understanding to do what was not proper.
29. There are complete with injustice/unrighteousness, iniquity/evil/wickedness, greed and evil. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice/evil. They are gossips/whisperers,
30. defamers/down talkers, hating God, violent rioters, thinking themselves to be better than others, boastful/vagabonds, discoverers of new evils, disobedient to parents,
31. without understanding, not keeping their word/promises, without natural/family affection, without mercy/compassion.
32. Though they exactly know/understand God's decree/ordinance/sentence of condemnation on those who do these things, that they are worthy of death, they not only do these things themselves, but join in approving / think well of those who do them as well.
My comments:
28. Because people didn't Honor and Worship God, He took away their ability to do what was right.
(The penalty for Sin, is Sin itself)
29. Now they are completely evil, not able to do what is good at all...they are evil in every respect.
30. They hate other people, they hate God, they even hate their parents.
31. They do not understand good, they don't keep their word, they cannot love, and they are without mercy.
31. These people know and understand what God has said about what they are doing...they know deep down that it is wrong! They know that according to God what they do is punishable by certain death...physically and spiritually, but they do it anyway (because God has handed them over to it) and they encourage others to join in the same. (The penalty for Sin is more Sin, and if it goes to far...you will start to encourage others in doing the same sin).
I know, I was there! I was born into this, just like everyone! God called me out of this cycle of Sin by His Grace through His Son Jesus Christ. And we will get to that wonderful gift of Grace in the second part of Chapter 3!!!
In Christ,
David
The doctrine of total depravity is crucial to a full understanding of the gospel. It's the idea of being completely helpless by ourselves to do anything to fix our sinful estate. Sin has completely remodled the way we think and act. Without a work of the Holy Spirit in someones life they are blinded by the Satan and condemned in their sin.
Keep it up.
