Romans 2:12-16

Romans 2:12-16
ESV
God's Judgment and the Law
"For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus."

NASB
"For all who have sinned without the Law will also perish without the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law; for it is not the hearers of the Law who are just before God, but the doers of the Law will be justified. For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves, in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus."

Stephanus 1550 New Testament

The long version:
Romans 2:12-16

12. For all who have missed the mark without God's law will also be utterly destroyed without God's law, and all who have missed the mark with/by God's law will be judged by God's law.

13. For it is not those who only hear God's law who are correct/right/righteous before God, but those who do what the law says will be declared righteous.

14. For when people of all races/nations who do not have God's law, by nature/instinct do what God's law requires, they are a law unto themselves, even though they don't have God's law.

15. They prove that the deeds of God's law are written on their hearts, while their conscience also testify the same, and their changing reasoning make accusation against or even defend themselves

16. on that day when, according to the Good News I preach, God judges the hidden thoughts of men through/on account of the Annointed One/Messiah Jesus.

My comments:

12. To understand what Paul is saying, and understanding of the O.T. is needed. God gave His law (in the first 5 books of the O.T.) to His chosen People (the Jews) everyone else did not have the law. God has a standard. If you want to spend the rest of eternity with Him, you must meet this standard...and that standard...well, it's perfection.

O.k. So, if a person misses the mark of perfection without God's law they will be UTTERLY Destroyed...that sounds like Hell to me!!! And if a person misses God's mark of perfection while trying to obey God's law, they will also be judged according to that law...and if found in failure...UTTERLY Destroyed!!!!

13. Hear Paul is saying that it is not enough just to hear God's law, it must be obeyed! And if the complete law is kept...that person will be declared righteous or correct and spend the rest of eternity in Heaven with God.

14. If people try to do what is right, they prove that God has also written His law into the hearts of every person! Even though they don't have the written law.

15. Here Paul makes that point again, but continues to say that because we change our minds as to what is right and what is wrong...apart from what is set in God's law...that our conscience will first accuse us of wrong doing, but eventually we will start deffending a false right i.e. something that God's law says is wrong, but because we change our minds all the time, we will start to justify according to our new laws and morals.

16. This deffense will certainly come out on the last day! When Christ comes to judge and reveal all the hidden thoughts of every man.

With or without God's law everyone who misses the mark of perfection is Doomed! We are held accountable because God's law is proved to be written on the hearts of all men, by their own consciences.
If we hold to God's law perfectly we will receive eternal life!
At one point in time, things like Homosexuality were considered completely wrong and detestable...I believe that is how God put it in Leviticus 20:13. There are a lot of other sexual things and even moral things that God has declared wrong that now our society has deem o.k.
News Flash: GOD DOES NOT CHANGE!!!!
These things are still wrong and will be punished on the last day.
However, Paul says that the people who do these things...their consciences will defend their actions! They believe that they are correct and that God is wrong!
News Flash: GOD IS RIGHT! AND HE DOESN'T CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This portion of scripture completey condemns the entire Human Race! There is no hope that comes out of these 5 verses...However, Paul is simply making a point that there is nothing we can do...we are completely depraved, we cannot even search for God on our own...not possible!
But that is why Jesus God's own Son came to this "Pale Blue Dot" previous post on Oct. 27th 2005. Jesus lived a perfect life, paid the price of Death, even Death on a Cross (the price was death -- any kind of death -- but Christ went throught the worst death ever devised) for us! So that if we only believed in Him and His Promises that we could enjoy eternal life with Him in Heaven.
Paul will get to this in Chapter 3!

In Christ,

David
