Romans 2:17-24

Romans 2:17-24
ESV
"But if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law and boast in God and know his will and approve what is excellent, because you are instructed from the law; and if you are sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth-- you then who teach others, do you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal? You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who boast in the law dishonor God by breaking the law. For, as it is written, 'The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.'"

NASB
The Jew Is Condemned by the Law
"But if you bear the name 'Jew' and rely upon the Law and boast in God, and know His will and approve the things that are essential, being instructed out of the Law, and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of the immature, having in the Law the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth, you, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that one shall not steal, do you steal? You who say that one should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who boast in the Law, through your breaking the Law, do you dishonor God? For 'THE NAME OF GOD IS BLASPHEMED AMONG THE GENTILES BECAUSE OF YOU,' just as it is written."

The Long version:
Romans 2:17-24

17. But if you call yourself a Jew and rest upon the law and boast in God.

18. and recognize/perceive God's will and receive what makes a difference, the law of God; because you are taught from the law of God

19. and if you are confident that you yourself are a leader/guide to those who do not see the truth of the law, a light to those in darkness

20. an instructor of those without reason, a teacher of the simple-minded/immature, having in the law of God the form/shape of knowing/knowledge and truth --

21. you then who teach other, do you not teach yourself? While you proclaim against stealing, do you steal?

22. You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who detest false gods, do you steal from temples?

23. You who boast in the law of God dishonor God by breaking/transgressing/going away from the law of God

24. For, as it is written, The name of God is slandered/spoken evil of by the nations because/on account of youl.

My Comments:

Paul changes His focus from Gentiles to Jewish people.

17. The Jewish people did rest upon the fact that they had God's law, and they thought that was going to get them into heaven. (Remember, Paul is writing this after Christ had come!! The law was fulfilled by Christ perfectly.)

18. It used to be that a person needed to uphold the law as best as possible and offer sacrifices to God for the commands that they broke...this was how one entered into heaven through the law.

19. He again shifts his focus now to the Jews who are studied in the law.

20. Still beginning to adress the teachers...maybe even kind of puffing them up...for a hard fall!

21. A simple question...if you teach, do you not also learn from your own teaching? Yes, we all do.
More to the point...You teach others to not steal, do you steal? In any way? Time at work? Anything?

22. You teach others not to commit adultery, do you commit adultery? (Remember what Christ said about adultery? "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart." Matthew 5:27-28) And another question, You who detest false gods, do you steal from temples?

23. You who boast in God's laws...the questions above are all based on God's laws!...You have broken God's laws! You are hypocites! You dishonor God's name by breaking the laws that you claim to uphold.

24. Paul again quotes the O.T.
"'Now therefore, what do I have here,' declares the LORD, 'seeing that My people have been taken away without cause?' Again the LORD declares, 'Those who rule over them howl, and My name is continually blasphemed all day long.'" Isaiah 52:5
and also in Ezekiel 36:20-38

Paul is saying that there is no one, not even the Jews who were given the law, who can fulfill it perfectly! The law is perfect, but it reveals our sins and indoing so condemns us all!
We can only put our hope in the one who made and fulfilled the law perfectly! Jesus Christ our Risen LORD and Savior!

In Christ,

David

People put their confidence in religious "externals"!

Knowing God gets replaced with doing things about God or for God.
Life becomes Activities and not time with Christ!!!

Vs. 17-19 has 6 externals that set the Jews apart from others.
The Jews looked like they were set apart...therefore better than others.
They thought that this was there right not a Gift by Grace!
They also thought that God only gave them Mercy and Grace, and others Judgment!

These people tend to Hide behind their Hypocrisy!

No one is perfect! Hypocrisy = My sins aren't as bad as yours.

ALL SIN IS EQUAL TO GOD!!!!!!!

Where is Grace on this Sin List?
If we have this sin list running through our mind, do we fully understand the Gospel??? How dare we hold people to the list when we fall short of it ourselves!!!

We are Guilty as Charged....

But...

Saved By Grace!!!!!

In Christ,

David
