Romans 3:1-8

Romans 3:1-8
ESV
God's Righteousness Upheld
"Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God. What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar, as it is written, 'That you may be justified in your words, and prevail when you are judged.' But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.) By no means! For then how could God judge the world? But if through my lie God's truth abounds to his glory, why am I still being condemned as a sinner? And why not do evil that good may come?--as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just."

NASB
All the World Guilty
"Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? Great in every respect. First of all, that they were entrusted with the oracles of God. What then? If some did not believe, their unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it? May it never be Rather, let God be found true, though every man be found a liar, as it is written, 'THAT YOU MAY BE JUSTIFIED IN YOUR WORDS, AND PREVAIL WHEN YOU ARE JUDGED.' But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? (I am speaking in human terms.) May it never be! For otherwise, how will God judge the world? But if through my lie the truth of God abounded to His glory, why am I also still being judged as a sinner? And why not say (as we are slanderously reported and as some claim that we say), 'Let us do evil that good may come'? Their condemnation is just."

The long version:
Romans 3:1-8

1.Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision?

2.Much in every way/manner/fashion, To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the sayings of God.

3. What if some [of the Jews] were disbelieving/faithless [of/in the sayings of God]? Does their unbelief render inoperative/abolish the faithfulness/reliability of God?

4. By no means! Let God be true though every man be found a liar, as it is writte, 'That you may be shown to be righteous in you words [what you say], and conquer/prevail when you are judged.'

5. But if our unjustness/unrightness/unrighteous-ness serves to demonstrate/establish the rightness/correctness of God, what shall we say? That God is not right/correct to bring wrath upon us? (I speak in a human way.)

6. By no means! For then how could God judge the world?

7. But if through my lie God's truth abounds to His Honor/Praise, why am I still being judged as a sinner/one who misses the mark of perfection?

8. And why not do evil that good may come? -- as some people slander/speak lightly or profanely of us claiming that we say such things. Their judgement is righteous/just.

My Comments:

1. Paul is still talking to the Jews and refering back to the Law...the O.T. He is asking them what if any benefit comes from circumcision...because he had just told them that if they accept circumcision and break the law it was worthless.

2. Circumcision is an outward sign of the covenant between God and His people...and He intrusted His Word to them.

3. But what if some of the Jews didn't believe? Are the promises that God gave to them null and void?

4. Absolutely NOT!!! God is truth and men are liers, so that God those who trust in God will be shown righteous when they are judged. I would think that this means both in this life and the next!

5. Our unrighteousness demonstrates/shows God's Righteousness!!
Now Paul askes the Jews an interesting question...if our unrighteousness proves God's righteousness, why do we turn around and say that God is not correct to bring His Wrath upon us?
Why do we blame God for things? Our falseness proves just how right and correct God is in everything!!!

6. Paul answers the question for the Jews, No, we can't say these things! If this God is not correct to bring His wrath upon the world even though He is right and we are wrong, How then could God ever judge the world for the wrong they have done?
The answer is that God couldn't judge the world...but thankfully He is right and we are wrong and His judgement will come!

7. Paul then says, why then if by my lie, God's truth abounds and is proven to His Honor and Praise, why is Paul being persecuted as a sinner?

8. And should we then as sinners do more and more evil that more and more of God's good may come? Because that is what many people say that we do! But their judgement is just.
The answer to these questions is coming in the next portion of Scripture!

In Christ,

David

The Jews had a tremendous advantage, but it was largely wasted on many of them. Because they had the scriptures that we now call the Old Testament they should have been able to recognize the Messiah at His coming. Unfortunately they were heard hearted and spiritually blind. That's why what John the Baptist did before Jesus came on the scene was so important! His message was to repent and get your heart right before the Lord so you don't miss the coming King!

God is completely just to condemn us all to Hell in His wrath, that's why it so miraculous what He did for us in His love.

I must respectfully disagree. I understand what you are saying with, "The Jews had a tremendous advantage, but it was largely wasted on many of them." However, God never wastes anything. He always has a purpose. Even if the purpose is that we will have no excuse when His judgement comes, that still is a purpose and a seed that has not been wasted (reference Mark 4 and parable of the sower and the seeds). Praise be to God that we have the hindsite of what the jews were missing out on. I have to wonder how many of us wouldn't have done the same in their shoes? We have been blessed with the gift of the bible, testimonies of thousands of Christians that have gone before us, and the power and work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of those that have entrusted their lives in a personal relationship with Christ. We can look back on the the Israelites and have the same feelings and attitudes of disbelief that they could act in such a way to God's provision and faithfulness while coming out of Egypt. However, how many times do we do the same things. I give glory to God that He has given us examples that we can look to and learn how not to act in relation to all He has given us. May we use it as a daily reminder of what we are so prone to doing-turning away from God's goodness and the path that He has set before us-in order that we might walk according to our own desires.

Until the day we die or are taken up to be with our Savior (only those that have a personal relationship with Christ), we will always be prone to having the same response as the Israelites and their next generations had.

Galatians 5:16-18,"But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law."

On another note, I just want to emphasize one of Dave's points about the law not being nullified. It is still there for our protection as guidelines. We just no longer use it as a means of working out our salvation. We know that only Christ can (and already has) brought a sufficient sacrifice that atones for all of our sin. We cannot live in a world of "hyper-grace" (Pastor James McDonald) where once we have accepted Christ we have permission to sin as much as we'd like. We still will be held accountable for ALL actions, thoughts, and words while on this earth. In order to bring glory to the Father, we must allow Him to change us from within and work through us. Romans 11 talks more about this.

This is great discussion. Praise God for the freedom and opportunity!

In Him,
Matt

In relation to the hyper-grace comment with Pastor James McDonald...James speaks AGAINST hyper-grace and is not an advocate for it. He is an awesome speaker from Harvest Bible Chapel in Rolling Meadows Illinois and does Walk in the Word on the radio. Just a clarification.
