Romans 3:27-31
Romans 3:27-31
ESV
"Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, since God is one. He will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law."
NASB
"Where then is boasting? It is excluded By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law. Or is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, since indeed God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith is one. Do we then nullify the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law."
Stephanus 1550 New Testament

The long version:
Romans 3:27-31
27. How then do we boast? It is excluded. (We don't.) By what kind of law? By the law of works? No, but by the law of faith/confidence in Christ.
28. For we hold/maintain/consider that one is made right with God by faith/confidence in Christ separate from works of the law.
29. Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also,
30. Since God is one. He will declare righteous the circumcised by faith/confidence in Christ and the uncircumcised through faith/confidence in Christ.
31. Do we then abolish/render inoperative the law by this faith/confidence in Christ? By no means! On the contrary/other hand, we uphold/establish the law.
Again one more passage of scripture that shows the folly of Roman Catholic theology.
My Comments:
27. If a person were able to completely fulfill the Laws requirements, that person would have a reason to boast before other men and God. But we can't boast! Boasting is not excluded by the works of the law, but by the law of faith in Christ Jesus! One cannot boast in something that has been given to them! That is why Paul says, "May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world." Galations 6:14
28. Paul is saying that the only way that a person can truly be made right with God is through Faith in Christ Jesus and that is separate from obeying the law! Spearate from Works of the Law...So being made right with God is from Faith in Christ Jesus and not works!
29. Paul mostlikely here sensed that the Jews would have an objection...so He askes the question who is God the God of? It it only of you the Jews? or is it of everyone? And He asnwers the question himself...God is the God of everyone!
30. Here Paul makes the point that because God is one!, and He makes no distinction between Jew and Greek, that He will declare righteous all who have faith in Christ Jesus...the circumcised/Jew and the uncircumcised/Gentile.
31. Paul askes another question. Does this law of faith go against the original written law that God gave to the Jews? Paul says No! This new law of Faith upholds, supports the old written law!
So, the written law show us our sin. It is the standard of perfection that we cannot attain! So God sent Christ to earth to provide for us another way, a way of Faith. A way for all people, because God loves the entire world (see John 3:16-17) and He wants everyone to be in a right relationship with Himself.
And this way of Faith supports the written law. Because Christ Jesus upheld the law perfectly!
Salvation/Eternal Life comes through Faith alone in the Sin offering of Christ Jesus alone! Works do not get you eternal life...because we will all fall short...Romans 3:23!
In Christ,
David
God's righteousness is Given, not Earned, based on the Redemptive Work of Christ to those who have Saving Faith.
The Grace of Jesus in John Chapter 8 is still there for us Today!
7 times in Romans Chapter 3, Forgivenness is linked to Faith!
James Chapter 2 contrasts Saving faith with Works Faith.
Saving Faith:
1. Turning away from sin to God (repentance)
2. Trusting in the Finished work of Christ on the Cross and through His resurection.
3. Transfer of ownership of my life to God.
In Christ,
David
