Romans 4:18-25
ESV
"In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, 'So shall your offspring be.' He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead (since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's womb. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. That is why his faith was 'counted to him as righteousness.' But the words 'it was counted to him' were not written for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification."
NASB
"In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, 'SO SHALL YOUR DESCENDANTS BE.' Without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah's womb; yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able also to perform. Therefore IT WAS ALSO CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS. Now not for his sake only was it written that it was credited to him, but for our sake also, to whom it will be credited, as those who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification."

The long version:
Romans 4:18-25
18. In expectant anticipation he had confidence in God against expectant anticipation, that he should become the father of many nations/races, as he had been told, 'So shall your offspring be.'
19. He did not weaken in his confidence in God when he took note of/contemplated his own body, which was as good as dead (since he was about a hundered years old), or when he took note of/contemplated the barenness/deadness of Sarah's womb.
20. No distrust/lack of respect for God made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong/empowered in his confidence in God as he gave praise/honor/glory to God,
21. fully convinced that God was able/strong/mighty/powerful to do what he had promised.
22. That is why his confidence in God was credited to/considered to be his as right standing with God.
23. But the words 'it was credited to/considered to be his' were not written on account of him alone,
24. but on our account also. It will be credited to/be considered to us who have confidence in God who raised up from the dead Jesus our Lord/master,
25. who was handed over for our false steps/sins and raised up for our accquittal/pronouncment of being in a right relationship with God.
My Comments:
18.Abraham Hoped against Hope. This could mean two different types of Hope...an expectant waiting vs. passive wanting, but I think that the Greek disagrees with that.
Hoped against Hope! Abraham could have Hope in two things...God's ability and his own ability. Abraham Hoped (expected waiting/anticipation) in God against Hoping in himself!!!
We need to learn how to do this! And stop trusting in our own abilities!
19. Because Abraham hoped/trusted in God's ability, he didn't weaken in his trust even when he looked at how old he was and the fact that his wife was not able to bear children!
20. Because Abraham trusted in God, he didn't waver in his belief of God's promise! And his faith grew as he praised God!
This is Awesome! We need to do this! The more we praise God and give Him Honor and Glory, the stronger our Faith in Him becomes!
21. Abraham knew without a shadow of a doubt that God was capable of doing what He had promised!
22. And because of this Faith, and it's strengthening by God, it was credited...give (not earn) to Abraham as Righteousness...being in a right relationship with God!
23. The words that were written in the O.T. were not just written for Abraham, they were mostly written for us...so that we might know....
24. That our Faith in God, will be credited...given (not earned) to us who have Faith in God who raised Jesus from the dead...after the crusifiction,
25. and was handed over as a sin sacrifice/payment of our sins and raised from the dead so that we could be considered in a right relationship with God through our Faith in Jesus Christ!
In Christ,
David
One more thing:
Faith does not create Reality!
You adapt your beliefs to God!
God's reality is the only thing that is true.
Ex. I could believe with all my heart that the Packers could still make it to the Playoffs, Win and Go on to win the Super Bowl.
But that is not reality....it wont happen!
We must conform ourselves to God.
Faith stirs up Hope! We have Christ...what better Hope can one have?
In Christ,
David
