Romans 6:15-19

Romans 6:15-19
ESV
Slaves to Righteousness
"What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification."

NASB
"What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be! Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness? But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh For just as you presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, resulting in further lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness, resulting in sanctification."

Stephanus 1550 New Testament

The Long Version:
Romans 6:15-19
Slaves to Righteousness

15. What then? Are we to sin/miss the mark of perfection set by God because we are not under law but under grace/unmerritted favor/unearned kindess? By no means!/May it Never be!

16. Do you not know that if you present/offer yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey/listen to, either of sin/failure, which leads to/brings death, or of obedience, which leads to/brings righteousness/right standing with God?

17. But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin/failure have become obedient from the heart to the standard/form/impression of teaching/doctrine to which you were committed/handed over to,

18. and, having been set free/unrestrained from sin, have become slaves of righteousness/right standing with God.

19. I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations/weakness/frailty. For just as you once presented/offered your members/parts of your body as slaves to impurity/uncleanness and to lawlessness leading to/bringing more lawlessness, so now present/offer your members/parts of your body as slaves to righteousness/right standing with God leading to/bringing sanctification/making on Holy.

My Comments:

15. Paul asks a question...So, because we are under grace and not the law, should we just go on sinning?
NO!!!!
The law is still there for our protection...protection from others and ourselves!!!

16. Also, if you offer yourself to sin, you become a slave to sin because you obey its desires and passions.
You can only serve on master! Sin, or God? Which will it be? Sin brings death. God brings righteousness!

17. Thanks: Same greek word as Grace! to God! for all of you who at one time were slaves to sin, but now serve Almighty God from your hearts and obey the doctrine you were taught!!!!
Standard/Form/Impression: actually a violent expression...like the teachings and the Gospel was forced/pounded in! (Doesn't it seem like that a lot?)
Committed/Handed over to: actually betrayed over to!!!! (This is so true, Our bodies are oppossed to the Gospel...it is not that the Gospel betrays us, rather that it is like a betrayal because our bodies are oppossed to it!)

18. and now that we are set free or unbonded from sin...we have become slaves of righteousness.
Bond-servant: A slave that has been freed from service, returns to the one who has freed him and offers his services and life.
God has purchased our freedom from Sin through Jesus Christ. Now we as Bond-servents have returned to God and offer Him all that we have...our very lives!

19. Paul is putting this in terms that we can understand because of our sin nature.
Once we freely offered ourselves to sin...which lead to more and more sin,
Now, we offer ourselves to God...which He makes us Holy!!!

In Christ,

David

Christianity: What does it mean to be a "Christian"?

It means: A life Change, we are made new Crations in Christ Jesus, and offer ourselves with Gratitude into His service!

Truth Claim: In Christ, we are Slaves to Righteousness.

In Rome at the time Paul wrote this letter there were 60 million slaves in Rome...meaning 1 in 3 people were Slaves!
Slaves were expected to have unquestionable obedience to their master.

Vs. 16 There is no such thing as absolute Freedom! We all serve something or someone.
However we do try to serve more than one. We try to have our feet in both worlds.
Are your feet in both Worlds?
As Christians we are now slaves to Righteousness, we have the ability to live a righteous life through Christ Jesus.
With God there is no "fence sitting"! You are His or you are not!
Who do you serve?

Action Point: Because you are a slave to Righteousness, Live like it!!!!
Vs. 19 I am not just going to live Righteously, I am going to go on the offensive and encourage others to Live Righteously also!!!

Living Righteously is a process, Some sin will fall off and some will cling on: Philipians 2:12-13 "Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure."
We must continue to be involved in Gods work and be obedient to Him!

Work out your salvation does not mean that we have to work to earn or gain or keep our salvation. It has nothing to do with that. It does mean that as Slaves to God we should continue to be thankful to Him for what He has done for us...and do what He asks of us with Joy!

Sometimes we as Christians get to a place where we actually think that we deserve Salvation! When truly we only deserve Death and separation from God and Eternal Wrath and punishment in Hell.
But God in His Love and Grace, sent His only Beloved Son Jesus Christ to Die on the Cross and pay the penalty for our sins...appease the Holy and Righteous Wrath of God on our behalf!
This and only this is the reason that we are Saved!
It has nothing to do with who we are or what we have done!
It has everything to do with Who God is and How much He loves us!

In Christ,

David
