Romans 5:18-21
Romans 5:18-21
ESV
"Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
NASB
"So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. For as through the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous. The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

The Long Version:
Romans 5:18-21
18. Therefore, as one trespass/false step/transgression/sin (or the sin of one) led to/resulted in condemnation/penalty/a judgment against all mankind, so one sentance of aquittal/righteous deed (the righteousness of One) leads to acquittal/pronouncing of righteousness and life for all mankind.
19. For as by the one man's (Adam's) disobedience the many were made/appointed sinners/sinful/missing the mark of perfection set by God, so by the one mans's (Jesus Christ's) obedience the many will be made/appointed righteous (a right/correct standing with God).
20. Now the law came in to increase/superabound/to make in excess the trespass/false step/transgression/sin, but where sin/missing of the mark of perfection set by God increased/superabounded/was made in excess, grace/unmerritted favor/unearned kindness from God abounded more exceedingly all the more,
21. so that, as sin/missing the mark of perfection set by God ruled/was king in death, even so grace/unmerritted favor/unearned kindness would rule/was king on account/because of righteousness/right standing with God to eternal life on account/because of Jesus Christ our Lord.
My Comments:
18. Paul is recaping his points. Adam sinned...that resulted in all of humanity being condemned sinners, Jesus kept the entire law..never sinned...and that resulted in an acquittal of condemnation for all mankind.
19. Same thing only said in a slightly different way.
20. Because sin was in the world, God gave the law so that people would know that what they were doing was wrong...that is why sin increase. But because sin increased, Grace also increased and overpowered the sin in that God sent His only Son, Jesus Christ to earth to die for the sins of the world.
21. Again, same thing as vs. 20 but said in a slightly different way.
The Point Paul is making here is that we are all sinners...in need of a Savior.
Jesus Christ is that Savior...but He MUST be LORD AND SAVIOR of your life!
This Chapter gives us 2 things!
1. Hope of the Glory of God...from vs. 1-11
2. Hope of Victory!...from vs. 12-21
Chapters 3,4, and 5 sin is plural
But in the last half of 5 sin becomes singular.
Adams sin leads to Judgment for all.
Christ's obedience leads to Victory over sin and justification and righteousness!
God changes us into the likeness of Christ...adding to us Weight!
Because Christ is Weighty, we become weighty through Him...not weightless like Idols.
See...2 Corinthians 3
In Christ,
David
