Romans 7:1-3

Romans 7:1-3
ESV
Released from the Law
"Or do you not know, brothers--for I am speaking to those who know the law--that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? Thus a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress."

NASB
Believers United to Christ
"Or do you not know, brethren (for I am speaking to those who know the law), that the law has jurisdiction over a person as long as he lives? For the married woman is bound by law to her husband while he is living; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law concerning the husband. So then, if while her husband is living she is joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress though she is joined to another man."

The Long Version:
Romans 7:1-3
Believers United to Christ/Released from the law

1. Or do you not understand, brothers -- for I am speaking to those who know/understand/perceive/recognize the law -- that the law is binding/lords over/rules over/master over a person only as long/for the amount of time he lives?

2. Thus a married woman (a woman under the power or subject to a man) is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released/set free from the law of marriage.

3. Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with/is joined with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from/not a slave to that law, so that she is not an adulteress though she is joined to/lives with another man.

My Comments:

1. Paul is directing His question to those who have a knowledge and understanding of the Law of God.
He is asking them why they don't understand that the law is binding...and one can only be released from the law by death.

2. Paul switches to an analogy...a woman married to a man is bound by the law of marriage. She is bound to that man as long as they both live. But if he dies she is set from from the law of marriage.

3. If she leaves him and is joined to another man before he dies, she is an adulteress...because she is still bound to her husband by the law of marriage.
But if her husband dies and she is joined to another man, she is not an adulteress because she has been set free from the law of marriage by the death of her husband.

Paul is making this analogy, because we are bound to the law of God in the same way that a man and woman are bound to each other in marriage!
But we died to the law with Christ (previous chapter)!
We were set free from the law and bound to Christ as a woman to her husband!

We have died to the law and become married to Christ.
We are now bound to Christ and are subject to Him and under His power.
No longer subject to the law, but to our new Master, Christ Jesus!

In Christ,

David

Romans 7-8:4

Christians and the Law

1. In Christ we are Released from the Law.

How? We are set free from the Law through our union with Christ Jesus!

Ephesians 2:13-16 Concentrate on (Vs. 15)
"But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility (by abolishing the law of commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace,) and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility."

Galatians 5:1
Christ Has Set Us Free
"For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery."

Why? Because we could never do it. We could never fullfill the Law.
Vs. 13 -- Law came that sin would increase. "Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure."
Sin is worse so we recognize our need of a Savior. Law stimulated sin in us to drive us to Christ!

Romans Ch 4
We were released for Righteousness, because we could not attain Righteousness through the law.

Romans Ch 7
We are released for Sanctification
1. To set apart for sacred use; consecrate.
2. To make holy; purify.
3. To make productive of holiness or spiritual blessing.

What does all this mean?
We have no strength to obey God within the Law!
Man: I have to fix something -- I will pass a new law.
God: I have to fix something -- I will make a new man!

The power is in this New Man...Jesus Christ!!!

2. Through Christ the Law is fullfilled in us.

No longer the written law, but the Law of the Spirit.

Galations 2:20
"I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

Matthew 11:29
"Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."

The Law is Good, but we can't do it!!!

But through Christ, We have the Strength!!!

Philippians 4:13
" I can do all things through him who strengthens me."

In Christ,

David
