Romans 7:4-6
Romans 7:4-6
ESV
"Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit."
NASB
"Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death. But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter."

The Long Version:
Romans 7:4-6
4. Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through/on account of the body of Christ/the Messiah/the Annointed One, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised/wakened from the dead, in order/once for all that we may bear fruit/be fruitful for God.
5. For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful/wrong/failing passions/that which befalls one/to be acted upon, aroused/awakened/brought to life by the law, were at work/active in our members/parts of the body to bear fruit/be fruitful for death.
6. But now we are released/set free from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve/are a slave not under the old written code/law but in the new/fresh life of the Spirit.
My Comments:
4. In a similar way to the example of a married woman (vs. 1-3), she is set free from the law through her husbands death...we are also set free from the law because of the death of Jesus Christ.
We were bound to the law, but Christ died to set us free so that we could belong to Him.
When the law is broken, a sacrifice is needed to appease the penalty for the broken law.
Jesus suffering and death was that appeasement for all of Humanity.
Now we have a choice:
A. Do we choose to accept this payment for our sins?
B. Do we deny this payment and choose to be held to the standard of the law...perfection?
5. While we were bound to the law, the sin nature that lives within each and every human was acting upon us, and through the knowledge of the law it was awakened and could only bear fruit for death.
"Bear fruit for Death(vs.5)/God(vs.4)."
Everything bears fruit...anything that is alive produces something...either it is good fruit or bad fruit.
Even doing a good deed with a bad motive produces bad fruit!
I.E. if I tell you something that is 99.9% truth and 0.1% lie, does not the whole thing become tainted and a lie??? Therefore it is bad fruit.
We can do nothing to appease and/or keep the law...it only brings bad fruit and death.
6. But being released from the law because of the death of Christ Jesus, we do not serve under that old law anymore, we can bond ourselves to Christ and serve Him.
In Christ
