Romans 7:7-12

Romans 7:7-12
ESV
The Law and Sin
"What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, 'You shall not covet.' But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. Apart from the law, sin lies dead. I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good."

NASB
"What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COVET.' But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind; for apart from the Law sin is dead. I was once alive apart from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin became alive and I died; and this commandment, which was to result in life, proved to result in death for me; for sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good."

Stephanus 1550 New Testament

The Long Version:
Romans 7:7-12
The Law and Sin

7. What shall we say then? That the law is sin/failure? By No Means! May it Never Be! Yet/on the other hand if it had not been for the law, I would not have know/recognized/perceived what it is to covet/desire/lust after anothers possessions if the law had not said, 'You shall not covet/desire/lust after anothers possessions.'

8. But sin/failure to obey the law, seizing/taking an opportunity through/on account of the commandment, produced/worked out in me all kinds of coveteousness/desires/lust for anothers possessions. Apart/separate from the law, sin is dead.

9. I was once alive apart/separate form the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died.

10. The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me.

11. For sin/failure to obey the law, seizing/taking an opportunity through/on account of the commandment, deceived me and through it/on account of it (the command) it killed me.

12. So the law is Holy/Sacred an the Commandment is Holy/Sacred and Righteous/Correct/Right/Just and Good.

My Comments:

7. Paul asks a question based on what he has just gotten done talking about.

Is the Law of God, Sin?

No it is not!

Because,
Without the law we would not know sin...we could not understand what sin was.
Sin is not holding to God's standard...Perfection. But without having the law to tell us what the standard is...we 1. can't uphold the standard and 2. don't know that we have broken the standard!

8. But once through the law we can understand that not upholding the law is sin, that sin takes its opportunity.
As humans we have this pull towards sin, and that is sin itself wanting us to break the laws of God. And it produces more and more sin within us.

But if there had been no law, sin is dead. We cannot keep track of wrongs if there is no standard.

9. Paul restates clearly that once the commandment came and he could understand right and wrong in God's eyes, that he could not hold to those standards and that because he now understood that he was sinning, he died.

10. The commandment that promised if you could keep it would give life, proved to be death, because it could not be kept.

11. Sin deceives us through the commandment, (think back to when you were a kid...did your mother ever say, "Don't touch the stove...it's very hot." And then the next thing you did was touch the stove?) We as humans have this bend towards doing the opposite of what we are told...sin deceives us and kills us because the commandment says don't...and we do it anyway.

12. The Law is Holy as well as the Commandment. They are Holy, Righteous/Just and Good!

The law is for our protection! We cannot keep it completely, but it does protect us.
Let's look at 3 of the commands:
You shall not steal -- well, stealing doesn't hurt me! Yes, but it hurts others and it hurts your relationship with the one you steal from. And if you get caught...you can get a large fine or be put in prison.
You shall not commit murder -- Well, that doesn't hurt me either! Yes, but it deffinately hurts the relationship you may have had with the other person and if you get caught could bring the death penalty.
You shall not covet -- But that doesn't hurt me either! Yes it does. If you covet your neighbors things, jellousy will build up within you and that will tear down the relationship with the other person...and then you may be tempted to steal from them...or even kill them to get what they have and you don't have.

The Commands are there for our protection! They are Good and Just and Holy.

We can't uphold them, but that is what Christ came and Died and was Raised for.
That we may believe in Him, and Confess that He is Lord and Savior and have eternal life with Him.

In Christ,

David

Christians and the Law

In Christ we are Released from the Law.

How? Through our union with Christ (Chapter 6)
Ephesians 2:13-18
"But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father."

Galations 5:1
Christ Has Set Us Free
"For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery."

Why? Because we could never do it ourselves.
The Law came that sin would increase (vs. 13). Sin gets worse so that we recognize our need of a Savior!!!
Law stimulates Sin in us to drive us to Christ!!!!!

In Chapter 4 we are Released from the Law for Righteousness.
In Chapter 7 we are Released from the Law for Sanctification.

What does all this mean?
We have no strength in and of ourselves to obey the Law!

Mans Solution: I got to fix it -- I'll make a new law (not understanding that we can't uphold the law)
Ex. On a campus there is a problem with underage drinking. So the Campus Authorities pass a new strickter law banning drinking from the campus completely. But that only makes the situation worse because now even the people who are of age are breaking the law.

Gods Solution: I got to fix it -- I'll make a new man!
The new man...through Christ Jesus' power is now capable of upholding the laws that are already in place.

In Christ,

David
