Romans 9:14-18

Romans 9:14-18
ESV
"What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God's part? By no means! For he says to Moses, 'I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.' So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy. For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, 'For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.' So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills."

NASB
"What shall we say then? There is no injustice with God, is there? May it never be! For He says to Moses, 'I WILL HAVE MERCY ON WHOM I HAVE MERCY, AND I WILL HAVE COMPASSION ON WHOM I HAVE COMPASSION.' So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy. For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, 'FOR THIS VERY PURPOSE I RAISED YOU UP, TO DEMONSTRATE MY POWER IN YOU, AND THAT MY NAME MIGHT BE PROCLAIMED THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE EARTH.' So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He hardens whom He desires."

Stephanus 1550 New Testament

The Long Version:
Romans 9:14-18

14. What shall we say then? Is there injustice/unrighteousness on God's part? By No means! May it Never be!

15. For He says to Moses, 'I will have mercy/pity/compassion on whom I have mercy/pity/compassion, and I will have compassion/pity on whom I have compassion/pity.'

16. So then it depends not on human will/wishing or exertion/running, but on God, who has mercy/pity/compassion.

17. For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, 'For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show/demonstrate/indicate/prove My power in you, and that My name might be proclaimed/announced in all the earth.'

18. So then He has mercy/pity/compassion on whomever He will/wishes/desires, and He hardens whomever He wills/wishes/desires.

My Comments:

14. So is God unjust in Blessing some and not others?
Absolutely NOT!!!

15. God said to Moses, I will have mercy on those whom I choose and I will have compassion on those whom I choose.

16. The decision is all up to God. It is not because someone earns it. We cannot earn favor from God, He gives it freely to whom He chooses.

17. He also hardens peoples hearts to His Glory as well. He used Pharaoh and hardened his heart to show His power to the world and set Israel free from bondage in Egypt.

18. So God has mercy on whoever he chooses...i.e. Israel, and hardens whoever he chooses...i.e. Pharaoh and Egypt.

The same goes for us!

We cannot earn our way into heaven! God has choosen before the foundations of the world His elect. Those whom will have eternal life with Him in Heaven.
The terms used to discribe this in the Bible do leave the option open that God knows everything...so He knew who would choose Him and who wouldn't.

The Bible very clearly teaches Free Will and Election (God's Sovergien Choice).

In our finite minds we cannot fit these two things together, but Deut 29:29 says, "The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law."

They work together for Him and He has not revealed how it works to us.
Can you handle that? Can you handle a God who knows more than you do?

Everything God does is just and right.

Remember He is the creator...Everything that exists...exists because of Him.

Is God greater for choosing people and showing them just how much they need Him, while yet condemning others to hell (this is how we see how much we need God).
Or, is God greater for allowing everyone to go to heaven?

Because most are on the path to Hell, God shows me just how Great He is and just how much I need Him!
I have sinned against Him, and dissobeyed His commands and deserve Hell and eternal torment, but He has chosen me and saved me unto eternal life! Thank you Jesus!
Those who are not sick, have no need of a Dr. But those who are sick know of their need.

Sin is the sickness, those who do not acknowledge their sin, don't need a Savior.
Those who do, know of their absolute need of Jesus Christ!

In Christ,

David
