Romans 9:6-13

Romans 9:6-13
ESV
"But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but 'Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.' This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring. For this is what the promise said: 'About this time next year I will return and Sarah shall have a son.' And not only so, but also when Rebecca had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad--in order that God's purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of his call-- she was told, 'The older will serve the younger.' As it is written, 'Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.'"

NASB
"But it is not as though the word of God has failed For they are not all Israel who are descended from Israel; nor are they all children because they are Abraham's descendants, but: 'THROUGH ISAAC YOUR DESCENDANTS WILL BE NAMED.' That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are regarded as descendants. For this is the word of promise: 'AT THIS TIME I WILL COME, AND SARAH SHALL HAVE A SON.' And not only this, but there was Rebekah also, when she had conceived twins by one man, our father Isaac; for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God's purpose according to His choice would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls, it was said to her, 'THE OLDER WILL SERVE THE YOUNGER.' Just as it is written, 'JACOB I LOVED, BUT ESAU I HATED.'

6. But it is not as though the word of God has failed/become inefficient. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel,

7. and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but 'Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.'

8. This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted/considered as offspring.

9. For this is what the promise said: 'About this time next year I will return and Sarah shall have a son.'

10. And not only so, but also when Rebecca had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac,

11. though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad/worthless--in order that God's pupose of election/divine selection might continue/remain, not because of works but because of his call--

12. she was told, 'The older/great will serve/be a slave to the younger/smaller/less.'

My Comments:

A look at names:

1. Abram: Exalted Father
2. Abraham: Sounds like the Hebrew word for Father of a multitude of nations

3. Sarai: (Abraham's wife) Princess -- based on her noble descent
4. Sarah: Princess -- based on her future noble descent (i.e. the liniage of King David but more importantly Christ)

5. Isaac: (Abraham and Sarah's Son) He laughs -- both parents laughed when God told them that Sarah would have a son (she was barren and 90 years old and Abraham was 100 years old)
6. Rebecca / Rebekah: (Isaac's wife) fat, fattened, a quarrel appeased

7. Esau: (Isaac and Rebecca's first born) He that acts or finishes (he sold his birthright for a bowl of soup)

8. Jacob: (Esau's twin) He takes by the heal, He cheats, deceitful (He came out holding onto Esau's ankle and also deceived Esau into giving up his birthright)
9. Israel: (Jacob's name as change after he wrestled with the LORD) He strives with God (Israel/Jacob was the father of the nation of Israel, the 12 tribes came from His 12 sons)

6. Paul is referring back to the fact that his brothers (Jewish People) are not all will be saved. But it is not because God's word has failed, but rather, the idea that all the decendants of Israel will be saved was a false interpretation of a promise.

7. The promise that was given to Abraham (He would be the father of many nations) was kept and honored by God, both Isaac and Ishmael (Abraham's first born son, but from his wifes slave) were turned into great nations. But the promise of the Messiah was only to be through Isaac (the son who was born of God and not of human ability).

8. So not all...according to the flesh will be saved, if that were the case, everyone on the planet would have no need of a Savior. But rather, everyone is in need of a Savior, because it is not of the flesh, but of a promised Messiah that people will be reconciled with God.

9. This is the promise of Isaac, and both Abraham and Sarah laughed when God told them this.

10. The promise carried through Isaac to His son through Rebecca.

11. And before they were born God had chosen that Jacob would be the heir of the promise rather than the firstborn Esau.
This was to so that God is Sovergien and that there is nothing we can do to earn blessings from God.
He will have favor on whom he has favor.

12. This was the promise to Rebecca.

13. God had favor on Jacob because his Divine Choice and not on Esau.

Both men however were also made into great nations...one resenting the other. The descentants of Esau attacked the Children of Israel as they were coming up out of Egypt.

In Christ,

David

You nailed it. Vine and the branches. Some of the gentiles were grafted in and some of Israel was cut off.

How you doing Dave? I haven't talked to you in a while. I hope all is well!
