Romans 11:17-24
Romans 11:17-24
ESV
"But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root of the olive tree, do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you. Then you will say, 'Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.' That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast through faith. So do not become proud, but stand in awe. For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God's kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off. And even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again. For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree."
NASB
"But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became partaker with them of the rich root of the olive tree, do not be arrogant toward the branches; but if you are arrogant, remember that it is not you who supports the root, but the root supports you. You will say then, 'Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.' Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you stand by your faith. Do not be conceited, but fear; for if God did not spare the natural branches, He will not spare you, either. Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God's kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off. And they also, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree?"

Romans 11:17-24
17. But if some of the branches (Jews) were broken off, and you, although a wild olive shoot (Gentile), were grafted in among the others and now share/partake jointly in the nourishing/rich/fat root (Prophets and all that was given to the Jews) of the olive tree,
18. do not be arrogent/exulted/boastful toward the branches (Jews). If you are, remember it is not you who support/carry the root (Prophets and all that was given to the Jews), but the root that supports/carries you.
19. Then you will say, 'Branches (Jews) were broken off so that I might be grafted in.'
20. That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast through faith/confidence (in Christ). So do not become proud/conceited/high lofty thinking, but stand in awe/fear;
21. for if God did not spare the natural branches (Jews), neither will He spare you.
22. Note then the kindness/goodness/excellence/uprightness and the severity/sharpness/steepness of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God's kindness to you, provided you continue in His kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off.
23. And even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again.
24. For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree.
My Comments:
Grafted:
1.
A. To unite (a shoot or bud) with a growing plant by insertion or by placing in close contact.
B. To join (a plant or plants) by such union.
2. To transplant or implant (living tissue, for example) surgically into a bodily part to replace a damaged part or compensate for a defect.
3. To join or unite closely: graft new customs onto old.
The tree as a whole is the story of God. Everything that is revealed to us in the Bible.
The Roots of this story are the Jewish people and their heritage.
The Branches are individual Jews.
And the Branches grafted on are Gentile Believers in Christ.
17. Some of the Jews didn't believe in Christ and were cut off from the tree. Then Gentiles who did believe in Christ were grafted on (united) on to the tree, and are refreshed and nourished by the roots.
18. Those who were grafted on should not be boastful over the others, for they are supported by the root (the heritage of the Jews).
19.-20. Jews were broken off so that Gentiles could partake in the life of the tree. They were broken off because they didn't believe in Jesus Christ. And that is what we must do to be a part of the tree, believe in Christ Jesus.
21. God did not spare the Jews who didn't believe in His Son Jesus. He cut them off from the tree, and if we (Gentiles) do not believe in Jesus, God will do the same. The only difference is, we (if we don't believe in Christ) are already cut off from the tree! We were not a part of the tree to begin with!
22. God is Both Kind and Harsh! But we must remember that He is Just in all that He does! He shows His kindness to those who believe in Christ and His severity to those who don't.
The phrase "provided you continue in His kindness" tends to through a lot of people off. They read this and think, I need to stay in God's kindness, that means that I could get outside of His kindness...I don't have assurance of my Salvation in Christ.
This however is not saying that. What it is telling us that we need to make our "Calling and Election sure"!
1 Peter 1:10
"Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall."
Jude puts it this way:
Jude 21
"Keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life."
But Jude made it very clear back in vs 1
"Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and brother to James, To those who are CALLED, BELOVED IN GOD THE FATHER AND KEPT FOR (Greek -- BY) JESUS CHRIST:"
We are kept by Jesus Christ!!!!!
And He Himself says this:
John 17:6-26
"I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them."
We are His!!!!! What a wonderful thing...and Paul had this to say about those who are in Christ:
Romans 8:31-35, 37-39
"What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died--more than that, who was raised--who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?"
" No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."
We are very secure in the Hands of Christ Jesus!!!!
23. Here Paul is saying that the Jews who do not believe in Christ still have a chance!!!
They must turn from their ways and believe in Christ Jesus!!!!
Then they too will be grafted back into the tree!!!!
24. Here Paul is saying that it is easier to graft a branch back onto the same tree that it came off of, rather than onto a different tree...but either way...God can do it!!!!
It is all about Faith! Confidence that what Jesus did on the cross and through the Resurection from the dead, that He is God himself and He alone is the only source of Salvation. Through this Faith we will be grafted into the tree that is the Body of Christ and live with Him forever!!!!
In Christ,
David
