Romans 12:3-8

Romans 12:3-8
ESV
Gifts of Grace
"For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness."

NASB
"For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness."

Stephanus 1550 New Testament

Gifts of Grace

3. For by the grace/unmerritted favor/unearned kindness given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly/overly proud than he ought to think/have understanding, but to think/have understanding with sober judgment/of sound mind/temperate/self-controlled, each according to the measure of faith/confidence that God has assigned/allotted.

5. so we, though many, are one body in Christ/Messiah, and individually members/limbs one of another.

My Comments:
Romans 12:2-8

3. Paul emphasizes that his ministry comes only from the grace of God!
We should not put ourselves on a pedistal...Paul and moreso Jesus are great examples of this. They had a ministry, they both came in Power (God's power) but they didn't lord it over anyone.
We are also to have an understanding of the gifts that God has given us.

4.-5. Paul again makes reference to the body to help explain. The body is made up of many parts, these parts are different and diverse, yet work together and are a part of the whole.
It is the same with the Eternal Church of Christ, it is diverse in many ways, but they come together to complete the whole church the body of Christ.

6. God has given each person different gifts. And we are to use them.
Prophecy -- means to speak the word of God. It is not defined in the N.T. and is heavily debated. It is seperated here from teaching.

7. Serving and Teaching are also gifts that God gives to people.

8. Encouragement, Giving, Leadership, and Care Taking are also listed among the Spiritual gifts.

God gives everyone who is His child spiritual gifts...but everyone is not the same, we all get different gifts and different combinations of gifts.
Also, God will equipe His servants with the gifts they will need to accomplish His will.
If God calls a person to something that they are not good at, He will get them through it, this is to bring greater glory to His name, for all will recognize that it was not the person who accomplished the task, but rather God working through that person.

In Christ,

David
