Romans 13:8-10

Romans 13:8-10
ESV
Fulfilling the Law Through Love
"Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, 'You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,' and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law."

NASB
"Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. For this, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT COVET,' and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law."

The Long Version:
Romans 13:8-10
Fulfilling the Law through Love

8. Owe no one anything, except/if not to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled/completed the law.

9. The commandments, 'You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder/kill, You shall not steal, You shall not covet/desire/lust after,' and any other commandment/order, are summed/gathered up in this word: 'You shall love/goodwill your neighbor/those who are near you as yourself.'

10. Love/goodwill does no wrong/evil/bad to a neighbor/those who are near you; therefore love/goodwill is the fulfilling/completing of the law.

My Comments:

8. The only type of debt that we should take upon ourselves if at all possible is the debt to love everyone around us!
Love completes the law of God.
However, no matter how much we strive and try to meet this, we cannot love to this standard! One little slip, even just a thought, breaks this.
Jesus put it this way in Matthew 7:12
"In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets."

9. Jesus sayed it like this in Matthew 22:38-40 "This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets."
Leviticus 19:18 "You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD."

10. Paul says it wonderfully here! Love completes God's laws...and that is what Jesus Christ did! He Loved God, and He loved us! He did this perfectly and no sin was found in Him. Hebrews 4:15 "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin."

In Christ,

David
