Romans 15:1-7

Romans 15:1-7
ESV
The Example of Christ
"We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, 'The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.' For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God."

NASB
Self-denial on Behalf of Others
"Now we who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of those without strength and not just please ourselves. Each of us is to please his neighbor for his good, to his edification. For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, 'THE REPROACHES OF THOSE WHO REPROACHED YOU FELL ON ME.' For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus, so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, accept one another, just as Christ also accepted us to the glory of God."

Stephanus 1550 New Testament

The Long Version
Romans 15:1-7
The example of Christ/self-denial on Behalf of others

1. We who are strong/mighty/powerful have an obligation/owe to bear/take up/carry with the failings/infirmity/weakness of the weak/unable/powerless, and not to please ourselves.

2. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.

3. For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, 'The reproaches/disgrace of those who reproached/disgraced you fell on me.'

4. For whatever was written in former days/to write before was written for our instruction/teaching/learning, that through endurance/perseverance/patient waiting and through the encouragement/call to one's aid of the Scriptures we might have hope/expectation/anticipation.

5. May the God of endurance/perseverance/patient waiting and encouragement/call to one's aid grant/give you to live in such harmony/sameness with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus,

6. that together you may with one/with one mind/together/passion voice/the mouth glorify/praise/honor the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

7. Therefore welcome/take in addition one another as Christ has welcomed/take in addition you, for the glory/praise/honor of God.

My Comments:

1. This is a great verse: Paul (considers himself strong) accknowledges that there are weak and strong Christians. However as before He does not allow the strong to hold themselves in High esteem! But they are to take up the weak, they are to be servants to those who don't know as much.

2. We are to build one another up, again servants of one another.

3. This is Psalm 69:9

4. Paul afferms the Authority of the O.T. Scriptures and that they are for our instruction. Also if we wait patiently, and stay in the Word of God for encouragement, we will have hope!
Hope of what? Christ Jesus' return in Glory! Eternal life with Him!

5. The God of endurance and encouragement, the two things listed in the last verse, allows us to live together as one body through Christ Jesus. We must strive for unity!

6. then together as one, with one mind, we lift our voices with passion to glorify and honor God the Father of Jesus Christ.

7. So, just as Christ has welcomed us, we should welcome all other brothers for God's glory.

In Christ,

David

Looking to Jesus
Gods (Pauls) "I have a dream" Speech

Living in Unity by Jesus example by His pattern and power.

1. Jesus did not please himself, he lived to please God (1-5)
Don't live a life that pleases only yourself (2), we need to build each other up!
Jesus lived to please God above all else.
Do we ever exclude? Us and them? (4) Isaiah 53

2. Jesus attitude revealed the ultimate purpose of unity (5-6)
Do we exclude? Us and them? We need Jesus Attitude!!!
Destiny is unified Worship not just unity!!!!!
We must reconsile!
Virtical (with God) reconciliation comes after Horizontal (with people)
Psalm 69:9
You = Father
Me = Christ

Serve in Love even when others are nasty to you!

3. Jesus accepted all of us (7-12)
Accept one another like Christ!
Vs. 7 Paul uses Christ, not Jesus.
Christ and Servant!
2 titles:
Christ = Messiah, high exulted
Servant = servant, low
Both in One man!!!
Matthew 20:28
Mark 9:35

Final thought:
Jesus is the source of Hope, and the Holy Spirit is the source of power (13)
This (vs13) is Pauls prayer of Dependence!!!

All Joy and Peace, not Judgement and Division.

We must embrace in Unity, I have a Dream, it will only be accomplished through the Power of the Holy Spirit!

Bad examples: Not met with the Power of the Holy Spirit but rather Human power.
Galatians: Legalism
Corinthians: Incest
They could only be handled through Christ, He is the only way!

1 word answer:
Abide

2 word answer:
Stay Close

We must abide in and stay close to Christ. He is the answer, the model and the source of power to live in Unity!

In Christ,

David
