Romans 15:14-21

Romans 15:14-21
ESV
Paul the Minister to the Gentiles
"I myself am satisfied about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able to instruct one another. But on some points I have written to you very boldly by way of reminder, because of the grace given me by God to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In Christ Jesus, then, I have reason to be proud of my work for God. For I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me to bring the Gentiles to obedience--by word and deed, by the power of signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God--so that from Jerusalem and all the way around to Illyricum I have fulfilled the ministry of the gospel of Christ; and thus I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I build on someone else's foundation, but as it is written, 'Those who have never been told of him will see, and those who have never heard will understand.'

NASB
"And concerning you, my brethren, I myself also am convinced that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge and able also to admonish one another. But I have written very boldly to you on some points so as to remind you again, because of the grace that was given me from God, to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, ministering as a priest the gospel of God, so that my offering of the Gentiles may become acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in Christ Jesus I have found reason for boasting in things pertaining to God. For I will not presume to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me, resulting in the obedience of the Gentiles by word and deed, in the power of signs and wonders, in the power of the Spirit; so that from Jerusalem and round about as far as Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ. And thus I aspired to preach the gospel, not where Christ was already named, so that I would not build on another man's foundation; but as it is written, 'THEY WHO HAD NO NEWS OF HIM SHALL SEE, AND THEY WHO HAVE NOT HEARD SHALL UNDERSTAND.'

Stephanus 1550 New Testament

The Long Version
Romans 15:14-21
Paul the Minister to the Gentiles

14. I myself am satisfied/convinced/confident about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled/complete with all/every knowledge and able to instruct/admonish/exhort one another.

15. But on some points I have written to you very boldly by way of reminder, because of the grace/unmerited favor/unearned kindness given me by God

16. to be a minister/public servant of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles/races/nations other than Israel in the priestly service of the gospel/good news of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles/races/nations other than Israel may be acceptable/good, sanctified/made Holy by the Holy Spirit.

17. In Christ Jesus, then, I have reason to be proud/boasting of my work for God.

18. For I will not venture/presume/have the courage to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished/worked out through me to bring the Gentiles/races/nations other than Israel to obedience -- by word and deed/work,

19. by the power/might/strength of signs and wonders, by the power/might/strength of the Spirit of God -- so that Jerusalem and all the way around to Illyricum I have fulfilled/completed the ministry of the gospel/good news of Christ;

20. and thus I make it my ambition/to love and seek the honor to preach/announce good news of the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I build on someone else's foundation,

21. but as it is written, 'Those who have never been told/announced/brought back word of Him will see/perceive, and those who have never heard will understand.'

My Comments:

14. Paul here reafirms his brothers in Christ. He knows that through the Power of the Holy Spirit that they are complete with the knowledge to instruct each other.

15. Paul did state some things extreemly strong, but this is just as a reminder to the Romans. This letter was not meant to tear them down, but rather to build them up and encourage them.
Paul also admits that the only authority he has comes from God as a gift of Grace.

16. This includes being a public servant for God to the Gentiles. Paul also offers all the work he has done by the Power of God, back to God as a thank-offering.

17.-18. So the only kind of boasting, is boasting in the work that God has done through Paul.

19. God would do wonderous signs every so often in the O.T. these are not to be common events but unusual. And they point to God's redemption of the Human race.

20. Paul seeks the honor of preaching the Gospel of Christ!
What if that was the desires of our hearts as well???
Also his missionary heart comes through...he does not want to build on anothers foundation, his desire is to preach to those who have never heard of Christ!
