Romans 15:22-29

Romans 15:22-29
ESV
Paul's Plan to Visit Rome
"This is the reason why I have so often been hindered from coming to you. But now, since I no longer have any room for work in these regions, and since I have longed for many years to come to you, I hope to see you in passing as I go to Spain, and to be helped on my journey there by you, once I have enjoyed your company for a while. At present, however, I am going to Jerusalem bringing aid to the saints. For Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the saints at Jerusalem. They were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have come to share in their spiritual blessings, they ought also to be of service to them in material blessings. When therefore I have completed this and have delivered to them what has been collected, I will leave for Spain by way of you. I know that when I come to you I will come in the fullness of the blessing of Christ."

NASB
"For this reason I have often been prevented from coming to you; but now, with no further place for me in these regions, and since I have had for many years a longing to come to you whenever I go to Spain--for I hope to see you in passing, and to be helped on my way there by you, when I have first enjoyed your company for a while-- but now, I am going to Jerusalem serving the saints. For Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make a contribution for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem. Yes, they were pleased to do so, and they are indebted to them. For if the Gentiles have shared in their spiritual things, they are indebted to minister to them also in material things. Therefore, when I have finished this, and have put my seal on this fruit of theirs, I will go on by way of you to Spain. I know that when I come to you, I will come in the fullness of the blessing of Christ."

The Long Version
Romans 15:22-29
Paul's Plan to Visit Rome

22. This is the reason why I have so often been hindered/prevented from coming to you.

23. But now since I no longer have any room for work in these regions, and since I have longed for many years to come to you,

24. I hope to see you in passing/journeying through as I go to Spain, and to be helped/sent forth on my journey there by you, once I have enjoyed/filled up/been satisfied by your company for a while.

25. At present, however, I am going to Jerusalem bringing aid/service/ministering to the saints/holy.

26. For Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make some contribution/sharer/fellowship for the poor among the saints/holy in Jerusalem.

27. They were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles/races/nations other than Israel have come to share in their spiritual blessings, they ought also to be of service to them in material/fleshly/carnal blessings.

28. When therefore I have completed/accomplished this and have delivered/sealed to them what has been collected/fruit, I will leave for Spain by way of you.

29. I know that when I come to you I will come in the fullness/completeness of the blessing/praise of Christ.

My Comments:

22. Paul has been prevented from going to Rome, because His commission was to those who haven't heard the name of Jesus.

23.-24. But now that work in the current area was complete, it is now time for Paul to move to another area where Christ has not been preached. He has chosen Spain as the next area and wants to include the Church at Rome in his mission to Spain.

25.-27. But for the moment Paul must go to Jerusalem to deliver a gift to the poor saints from those in Macedonia and Achaia. Vs. 27 is hard for some people with "Material or Fleshly or Carnal Blessings". However, these people had an abundance of wealth and were pleased to share it with those in Jerusalem. (at this time Jerusalem was a very impoverished city, and the Christians living there were a minority.) This is an example, that as Brothers and Sisters we are to help each other out as much as we can. For if you have received Spiritual Blessings from someone, you should be willing to share Material Blessings. (this is also a passage in support of Pastors being payed by the Congregation.)

28. When Paul finished this mission, he would be on his way to Spain by way of Rome.

29. Paul knows that no matter what happens along the way, the complete blessings of Christ will be with him.
Pauls arrival in Spain: Acts 28:11-16

David
