Romans 16:17-23

Romans 16:17-23
ESV
Final Instructions and Greetings
"I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. 18For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive. 19For your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil. 20The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. 21Timothy, my fellow worker, greets you; so do Lucius and Jason and Sosipater, my kinsmen. 22I Tertius, who wrote this letter, greet you in the Lord. 23Gaius, who is host to me and to the whole church, greets you. Erastus, the city treasurer, and our brother Quartus, greet you."

NASB
"Now I urge you, brethren, keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and hindrances contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them. 18For such men are slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of their own appetites; and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting. 19For the report of your obedience has reached to all; therefore I am rejoicing over you, but I want you to be wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil. 20The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you. 21Timothy my fellow worker greets you, and so do Lucius and Jason and Sosipater, my kinsmen. 22I, Tertius, who write this letter, greet you in the Lord. 23Gaius, host to me and to the whole church, greets you. Erastus, the city treasurer greets you, and Quartus, the brother."

My Comments:

17. Paul quickly goes back to some of the problems that the Romans were facing. Encouraging them to hold to what they had been taught and avoid false teachers and those who cause divisions.

18. These people and the selfish nature of these actions are sinful and do not serve the Lord, but the flesh. Smooth talk and flattery to deceive are also sinful.

19. Paul encourages the Romans for their obedience to the Lord and encourages them further to be wise or to do good, and avoid anything that is evil.
1 Thessalonians 5:22 "Abstain from every form of evil."

20. This comes from Genesis 3:15
"I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel."

21. Men who were with Paul working with him while Paul wrote this letter.

22. Paul often used others to write his letters. He would in his own handwritting write the greeting and then have another person write down the rest...kind of like a secretary.

23. Other men that were also with Paul. It is interesting that Erastus, a Christian held such a postition of authority.

In Christ,

David

sorry I haven't commented on here forever. Been crazy busy.

hmmm... people who create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught....hmm. Nope I've never ran into anyone like that.lol.

I appreciate all your hard work on this Romans study. I also appreciate your wisdom as to stepping out of a fruitless debate with you know who.
